Whats needed to make my laptop wireless broadband?

I've got an old 2nd hand Dell laptop i paid 100 for, its running XP and a half decent spec, just ordered a D-LINK 54MBPS 802.11G PCMCIA LAPTOP WIRELESS/WIFI CARD to slot into it and hopefully that means it will be ready for wireless internet as I roam around my flat.

Now, My current set up is a home pc with no wireless components, connected to my Sky wireless router via ethernet cable.

Can I keep the home pc as it is, connected to the net with the ethernet cable plugged in the back, whilst at the same time connecting to the internet with my lap top from wherever I happen to be around the flat?

What is the procedures and anything I have to do, or bear in mind to enable this to goto plan?

      Thanks.

It will be fine to keep you're desktop PC connected via the wire while making the laptop wireless via you're PCMCIA card. You won't need to make any changes to you're desktop PC to do this.

You will need to use the SSID/Network key info that was provided with your router to make the laptop wireless. If you have lost the card all the relevant info should be on the underside of your router

      Hope that helps

Re: Whats needed to make my laptop wireless broadband?

      Hmmmmm

      That didn't go so well!

I do appear to have installed the driver/software for my new D-LINK 54MBPS 802.11G PCMCIA LAPTOP WIRELESS/WIFI CARD in my laptop OK, but it doesn't work.

It can see my sky SSID, someone elses SKY SSID, and a guest unsecured one as well.

I try connecting to mine, i enter my network key but its not worked right. I cant connect to the net. In the box that says 'Choose a wireless network', it just keeps flashing and alternating from 'Acquiring network address', to 'Automatic'.

Couldn't connect to the unsecured one it found because it then wanted a password/log on details.

Re: Whats needed to make my laptop wireless broadband?

Working now, I followed the instructions in the wireless tutorial sticky post.

Problem was in the router set up - Wireless Station Access List - Turn Access Control On

It wasn't on by default I don't think.

Then I noticed an 'unknown device' in the list which I then added to the safe list manually so its always a trusted device, copied and pasted the mac address from where it was showing up below in the box. I trust I added the right 'device' to the safe list even though it comes up as unknown because its working now..

Hope I haven't messed up and added someone elses device to the safe list!
