      Wireless problem

As a 60 year old pc virgin I am having a problem that I hope one of you experts can help me with.

I can not get a wirless connection on me sky router, when I attempt to log on using my sky pass word it states that my system is not set up for it.

I have spent an absolute fortune ringing the sky help line, who have stated on the last three calls,

That because I am using Vista, this is corrupting my imput.

Take your Pc back to the supplier and have it checked.

We are having problems but all will be resolved by 1630 today.

In the end I took my lap top to a mate who has Sky and would you believe I could connect to his net work with no problem using his password.

The Sky was only installed 6 weeks ago it worked at fist but I can only get on line by using the yellow lead connected to the router and my pc is new, does anyone know how I can over come this problem with out having to go through the pain of talking to the Sky EXPERTS.

      Cheers.

      @brianstessa

Can you be a bit more specific please: what password are you trying to enter and where (don't post your password)? What error message are you getting and where. What wireless card/USB dongle do you have in your PC?

I am using the password supplied by sky, this is the same as is printed on the bottom of the router ( network key ), as for wirless card, no idea, but as stated no problems connecting to my mates system.

      Re: Wireless problem

It sounds as if there is an encryption or network key problem.

The Sky router is set for WPA encryption by default and this must also be set on your wireless adaptor. The network key should be entered exactly the same in both devices.

What I recommend you do is connect the router wired and log into the router admin pages. Go to wireless and check that the router wireless is enabled and that the network key is as is printed on the router - even better make up a random password of your own of at least six characters. When you've done that disconnect the wire.

Then go into your wireless card configuration in your PC and ensure that the encryption and network key are entered identically (i.e. same case, same key - either the Sky one or the new one you created) to that in the router.

If you still can't connect, connect wired to the router again and this time turn off encryption (security options). If you can now connect wirelessly then this means that either the encryption or the key was entered incorrectly.

Note: don't leave the router wireless enabled with no encryption set for more than a few minutes as this is a security risk.

If you are still stuck then have a read through the other posts in the wireless forum for info and ideas.
