Grrr Please help Wireless connection (and some times wired problems)

Hi all, Firstly I have searched the forum and found lots of good info, but I just keep having the same problems!

we have just swapped to sky from Tiscali, we have two identical Acer Aspire 3022 laptops, but neither will connect via wireless, to the skiy router, they will both connect wired (although that connection isn't always stable).

Going to contradict myself now, but both laptops will say they are connected to the router, but neither will actually go onto the internet, and when going into the router, they do not show up on Attached devices.

We have been with sky about 3 weeks and have a 25 phone bill to the helpline already, and I really am running out of patiants.

I really hope someone here can help

      I`ve got a similar problem.
I`ve got a laptop which will connect to the router OK (via wireless) but won`t connect to the Internet.
Has "limited or not connected" when connected by Ethernet cable and won`t connect to internet.
But if I boot from Linux it connects ok with ethernet and net works fine.
Done all the usual stuff , auto config, fixed IP, repair connection and all that.
Laptop has previously been on NTL/Virgin BB.
(fixing for a friend and Laptop was full of trojans and viruses all now removed)
Am I missing something with the windows XP connections settings ?
Would a reinstall of XP over the top of present one help ?

Usual advice, access the router's user interface via Browser (see help files on Sky CD or FAQs on this site) turn off wireless security temporarily. See if you can connect now.

If using Vista, get the latest drivers for wireless adapter. Reapply wireless security, checking that encryption method used is supported by both the computer and the router.

Tried the turning off security idea, but didn`t help as I can connect to router no problem with security turn on. Can reach the router but can`t get inernet.
Looks like a corrupt XP and of reg/ files.
But don`t want to have to wipe and do a clean install if I can help it.

Ashleyrunt, can you do an ipconfig /all in a command window and post the output on here.

Will do later if I`m still not having any luck, trying an uprade to XP Pro to see if that helps.

Re: Grrr Please help Wireless connection (and some times wired problems)

I eventually got mine working a very strange way, by going into the router 192.168.0.1 and adding "ALL" to the firewall settings (as in websites) and by changing the network pass key to one of my one, and it just worked

Have you tried disabling the windows firewall, it's not needed when you are using the router anyway as the router's own security is better.

      Worked for me anyway

Just finished upgrade to XP Pro but didn`t seem to make any difference

That hasn't picked up an address from the router at all. You said earlier it could see the router, I think you need to re-establish the wireless link.
