my signal is always excellent receiving 54mbps so i wud have thought i wud get a good speed but however i keep getting disconnects and poor speed of 2500

Wireless signal strength is not the same as signal quality. Signal quality determines wireless throughput.

      Re: Disconnecting problems?

      I don't think I said signal throughput

Your wireless card/dongle reports a connection speed but this is only measuring the signal strength. People quite reasonably presume that this means that whatever figure is reported is how "fast" the connection is. Not true, as you could have a very strong signal that is full of noise i.e. poor quality.

The quality (i.e. lack of noise or more accurately signal noise ratio) of the connection is essentially what determines throughput. Throughput is the amount of data able to be sent/received in a given time frame.

Low quality wireless signal = low download/upload speeds.

      Re: Disconnecting problems?

maybe it could be a wireless problem then, cos i am using the test socket and i still keep getting disconnected,
however that dont explain my poor stat results tho like i think people have said on ere my noise margin aint good and my SNR aint very high at all considering i live right near the exchange

      Re: Disconnecting problems?

      You have two problems.

The line problem one was answered in post #18 and the wireless one in post #20 and subsequent.

      Re: Disconnecting problems?

wen using ether net the internet dont disconnect but when wireless it does
      upnp is off
noise margin dont drop below 5db (dont even go below 10) usually stays at 11
filter n cable n router must be ok

so could be line errors exchange fault or poor wireless connection even tho it sais exellent connection all the time

Then the disconnects are down to a wireless problem. The line problem is incidental (but needs fixing though).

I had the same problem as you. Wireless would cause disconnection but wired in to LAN it was stable. Sky Tech support also reduced my line speed to 14.5 mbps because of errors on the line.

I have kept it wired to router and seems ok to me now when surfing the net or p2p. UPNP is ON for me.

      Re: Disconnecting problems?

my line was capped at 8056kbps straight away i think cos wen i got my router set it up and thats what it was,i live right by the exchange tho and my line attenuation is roughly bout 11 so i shud be able to get 16MB as someone told me,
do u know what errors to look for in the stats????
my problem is i cant have my comp downstairs but my bt swocket is downstairs so i have to use wireless
