      Adapter problem?

      Hi,

I am unable to connect to the wireless signal but it is fine with the ethernet cable.

I keep getting a message saying that it is searching for a network registration. I have assumed from this that my wireless adapter is not compatible with the Sky router.

The adapter is a ASUS WL-167g.

Does anyone know if this is the problem?.

      Thanks,

      Mr P

      Re: Adapter problem?

Hi, I'm new to the forum so hopefully I don't break any rules, if i do just shout.

About your problem, I assume that you have used this adapter before with the sky router? If not it may be the encryption on the adapter is not compatible with the sky router. I use a Belkin that only has WEP encryption so had to reset the routers encryption to match.

      Re: Adapter problem?

I have used the adapter before with BT broadband and it worked fine. I have just switched over to Sky. When I called the customer service line they tried switching me from WPA to WEP but that didnt work.

I then got the standard answer of "you will have to contact the manufacturer of the adapter......"

      Re: Adapter problem?

May well be an encryption issue -- read the help files on the Sky CD or tutorials here for how to address the router's user interface and temporarily turn off encryption until you get a reliable connection.

      Thanks for all your help.

I am getting to the stage where it says the connection wizard was created successfully although there is also the following message

"ERROR - Microsoft Windows XP -(this computer, Depending on the wireless software running on this computer, the Wireless Network Setup Wizard might not work. For details, see article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on Microsoft.com.)"

      Re: Adapter problem?

It feels like Im almost there!

Under "choose an available wireless network", it has the sky connection and it says "this network requires a network key. If you want to connect to this network, click connect". If I do that, it tries to connect but then 'times out' without connecting. It also doesn't ask me for the network key which I found strange.

Edited to add: Its now asking for teh network key for some reason but its still not connecting.

      Re: Adapter problem?

I'm pretty sure it is because of the encryption not on the router but the adapter, if you check you will probably find that the adapter uses wep, you need to reconfigure the router to this encryption, let it generate a ket, re-install your adapter and enter the key the router generated and test the adapter, if like mine it may take 2-3 times before the adapter talks to the router after that it should work fine. P.s you must press the reset on the adapter first

      Re: Adapter problem?

This a great help. I have generated a WEP key so I think I have managed the router side of things. I have no idea however how to reset the adapter. I'm trying to make my way through the ASUS website at the moment but any more help would be most helpful!

      Re: Adapter problem?

Not to sure about the ASUS adapter, when you use the installation disk does it not ask for the network encryption key? It should do, when it does you just enter the key that was generated by the router, remember that you will need the adapter connected to your PC during this set-up period.
