One thing to check, our old inspiron had the arial leads which were very fiddly to put on and could pop off if you put down the computer too hard, if you can get to the card without voiding the warrenty perhaps check that the wi-fi antennas are on nice and tight?

Yes and thanks. I have now tried but to no avail.

I have got a temporary solution. I have borrowed a friends Netgear WG111T USB network card and got that to work ok. Dell are still blaming Netgear. I am of a mind to send the whole PC back if it can't be fixed properly.

If another network card is working it sounds like it's a problem with the card or that the Dell card is having a really strange conflict with the router.

Take your PC round a friends house that hasn't got sky and try both network cards on a non-netgear router and if the dell card still refuses to work then it's definately the dell card.

I found that dealing with Dell customer services is like all customer service recently (it's like having your teeth pulled with no anathestic) yet the Dell engineers are great and will do everything they can to sort it all out, our last inspiron got a new heatsink and the engineer also replaced the motherboard as well just to make sure it was all ok.

May have to phone Dell up and just say the wi-fi has stopped working full stop and get the engineer round if you can.

Is it possible that you are just asking the wireless connection to go too far? The article here (from another post) gives some background to wireless connections -

Just had a call from Dell. Apparently their card/software is at fault!!!!

They only launched it at the beginning of the month and I was amongst the first to have it. Apparently others have reported similar issues, not just Sky Broadband Users.

Anyway, their technical support people are working hard to resolve the problem and hope to have one by tomorrow evening.

Thanks to everyone for their responses so far.

Does the card have an older driver for it avaliable? As I had to wait 3 months when the Dell BIOS for this system refused to boot with USB devices attached and I was told by a mod on the dell forum to roll back several versions until the new one was ready.

Like most manufacturers Dell aren't particulary speedy when it comes to doing updates.

I don't really know. This is, I believe, a new card that they have now started to put as an option when buying a new PC. I think it was only launched on 1st September. Previously, they only offered USB connected wireless cards. If I recall correctly, they were from Belkin.

Maybe there is an old driver because, although it is a Dell part, its probably rebadged from another manufacturer eg: a lot of the Dell printers are rebadged Lexmarks etc.

However, they are ringing me later today and I will ask. Will let you know if I find out anything further.

If Dell support don't give you any joy, go to the invoice you got from dell and see what wi-fi card it is and post it up on here and it may be possible that it's only the driver that is 2 weeks old.

When I got the new laptop for my wife's PC it had the excat same wi-fi card that the previous inspiron had that we got 3 years earlier.

Don't know if you have found this yet:

      Dell - Support

This is the dell support and driver page, enter your model and up comes all the possible drivers for the system, it also includes all the older driver that have been launched for the hardware as well as the latest fixes.

Re: Vista and wireless networking ... aaarrgggh!

      Adrian,

Thanks for your responses. My PC is the new Inspiron 531 Desktop, not a laptop. The cards your link points to are for laptopns but I did have had a look on the Desktop site but can't find anything for my card.

Dell have only offered USB wireless cards as an option in Desktops previously as far as I know. This is a new option for desktops. If you wanted your desktop to have wifi previously, you had to go and get the card from PC World and places like that.

Dell should be ringing me with an update shortly. Will post the result here as soon as I can.
