Buying a new wireless Laptop PCMCIA Card

I have been upgrading my wireless network from Belkin (or should that be BROKEN) to what ever is better.

So far my Desktop PCI card has been upgraded from a Belkin, lets keep dropping the connection to a Linksys.

Now it is the turn of the laptop PCMCIA card, but as this is used in all rooms in the house it needs to have a good connection to the SKy Router and therefore have a powerful signal.

I have been looking at http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...=7625874036B03 and it mentions rangebooster. But do I need a Linksys Rangebooster router to get use of this?

It also mentions NIMO and when looking at the Netgear website (comparing the SKy router) this does not have NIMO. So is it a waste to buy this or will it still be better thn a 54g card?

      Thanks for all your help.

      Over to you!

Re: Buying a new wireless Laptop PCMCIA Card

I've a feeling that the way MIMO works (tunes the channel to match the reception qualities of the environment -- or some such) means you need MIMO at both ends.*

You're right to avoid USB. All you can really do is check out reviews of PCMCIA and PCI cards -- friends have Belkin PCMCIA and say they're pretty good, I've used Netgear PCMCIA and PCI and unbranded PCI -- all seemed to work well.

Bear in mind that indoor wireless range is really only about 50ft or through 3 walls -- or less if there's a lot of metal and brick involved. Try raising the router above furniture level, make sure you stay clear of neighbour's wifi channels (scan each room you'll be in). One dodge that works is to put the router and computer near windows on the same side of the building.

*You could, change the router to a MIMO model -- first you need to extract the username and password from the Sky router. If you fancy trying put up a post asking how.
