      Angry Keep losing wireless connection!

      Hi

      I've been with Sky BB for a few months now and used to get a perfect wireless connection on my laptop and Netgear router but a couple of weeks ago I got some pretty bad viruses on my laptop and had to re-install windows etc.

      Since I did this I am losing my wireless connection every couple of minutes, at first I thought it might be a problem with drivers etc. that I installed on my laptop but I have tried connecting to my mother's wireless network (she's on AOHELL) and it connects perfectly. A friend has tried connecting to my network and also gets problems.

      I can't think what the problem can be as I don't think I changed any settings on the actual router when I formatted my laptop - I can connect fine with my laptop via an ethernet cable, just not wirelessly. I have a desktop PC that is connected to the router with another ethernet cable and the connection is fine there too.

      I've tried turning off UPnP as suggested by another post here but this doesn't help. I have also checked that both PC and laptop have automatic IP allocation enabled.

      Can anybody offer any ideas? It's really starting to bug me!

      Thanks for your help!

      Jamie

      TCP Optimizer is worth a try - improved my wireless a lot.

      Re: Keep losing wireless connection!

      When you search for wireless networks are there any other strong networks in the area, maybe someone has set up a new one on the same channel as yours. In which case might be worth changing channel.

      Re: Keep losing wireless connection!

      I tried changing the channel from 1 (default) to 6 and there is no improvement. I tried channel 11 too but no luck there either...

      Re: Keep losing wireless connection!

      Few suggestions:
      1. Look for sources of interference - cordless phones, microwaves, other radios or electrical equipment/power sources. Move the router to a different place.
      2. Check if the router's antenna is firmly attached
      3. Try connecting at short range - does the connection still drop?
      4. Keep router's wireless mode on 'Auto 108Mbps'
      5. Connect without encryption (temporarily) - any difference?
      6. All else fails, and you're certain that the laptop is not the problem - reset the router to factory default (press the reset button at the rear for 10-15s)
      Hope it works out for you.

      Re: Keep losing wireless connection!

      Thanks for the advice but sadly none of it has helped at all!

      I gave Sky a ring as I had run out of things to try and after asking me a few questions the bloke told me that my router must be fine as my PC connects ok (via ethernet) and that the only way he could help me was if I purchased a Sky certified wireless card for my lappy!

      As I'm still convinced it's a problem with my router I asked if I could have a replacement and was told point blank NO! I got transferred to his supervisor who told me the same thing then strangely enough when I threatened to cancel I was offered a replacement router by the retentions department! funny that...

      I was expecting the new router to arrive yesterday but with the Royal Mail strike it should come Monday now, I'll post back here when it comes.

      Angry Re: Keep losing wireless connection!

      I got my replacement router from Sky today but it hasn't fixed my problem at all!

      Just to recap here's what I've tried so far:

      Made sure I have the correct drivers/software installed for the wireless card;
      disabled encryption on the network;
      changed the channel in the router settings (all values from 1-11);
      made sure my laptop is set to auto configure IP;
      tried to connect using ethernet cable - this works fine;
      used TCP Optimizer - made no difference;
      tried moving router around the room & even putting laptop right next to router;
      changed wireless mode to Auto 108Mbps;
      disabled UPnP;
      reset the router to factory settings;
      had a replacement router from Sky

      I'm really stumped now - I thought the new router would solve my problems but it hasn't. I took my laptop to my sister's house today and connected to her network straight away with 100% quality/100% strength and stayed connected for hours so I don't think it's a problem with my wireless card!

      I forgot to mention that I usually lose the connection when I try to open more than 1 website at a time or try to download a file or try to run a speed test - if I do any of these then I instantly lose my connection and have to wait a few seconds for it to auto reconnect. If I connect, open a website and just stay there I usually have no trouble.

      Can anybody suggest anything as this is really bugging me now!

      Many thanks
      Jamie

      Your router doesn't happen to be connected to an extension cable does it?

      Re: Keep losing wireless connection!

      Hi

      Thanks for your reply - I thought I'd replied to say it was sorted!

      My problem disappeared a few hours after I connected my new router - as I hadn't changed any settings on the laptop then I'm assuming it was the router that was the problem...

      Oh, and I didn't have an extension lead plugged into the router - not that it matters now lol

      Thanks to everyone for their help!
