Wireless doesn't work; I have to use ethernet cable

      Hi
I've been using the Netgear router supplied by Sky with recent broadband connections. Up until now the wireless worked fine, but the last two weeks have seen my laptop unable to detect any wireless network connection. I'm therefore forced to use the ethernet cable. Nothing in my setup or room has changed. The only new thing that has happened is that Windows applied some updates.

Can anyone help me out here?

      Thanks
      D

how are you trying to connect wirelessly, using windows util or the wireless adapter util.

Is your firewall now preventing access? Can you detect any wireless networks (ie any of your neighbours)?

The Sky CD help files explain how to access the router's user interface.

Once in I'd check that wireless isn't disabled. Then try disabling encryption temporarily. If the wireless adapter scan utility has detected neighbouring wifi networks change to a frequency 6 channels from the strongest. If you have a cordless phone or video sender move the base station away from computer/router.

One of the XP updates affects WPA encryption -- try reapplying the passphrase to the adapter, if no joy use WEP until you figure out the problem.

If you cannot detect any wireless networks it may be a hardware fault -- to check that the laptop isn't the problem try it at a known wireless site -- such a friend's place or a coffee bar.
