Default Sky 8 Character WEP Key issue

When trying to connect to the wireless router via a laptop, I am asked to insert and confirm the WEP/WPA key as usual. This is using windows XP and the standard wireless zero confirguration service to connect. The problem with this is that the WEP key printed on the back of the SKY broadband router is 8 characters long and trying to connect with it results in the following error.

      Wireless configuration

The network password needs to be 40 bits or 104 bits depending on your network configuration.

This can be entered as 5 or 13 ASCII characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.
I've read on various forums and the SKY help guides etc that the router is set to WPA encryption so I've tried to set that first to see if it makes a difference but it neglects to request the WEP key at all and fails to connect if it's set to WPA...

The WEP Key I've been given contains non HEX characters I.e. Characters which are not 0-9 A-F, so presumably it wants the 5 or 13 ASCII character key entered however the key is 8 characters long which leaves me stumped.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

      Regards,
      Ben

Re: Default Sky 8 Character WEP Key issue

The network key under the router is for WPA-PSK.
From your description, your laptop is trying to use WEP and requires the Key.

Log onto the router (192.168.0.1) using a wired connection
      Click Wireless settings
tick the radio box next to WEP
You will now see a WEP security encryption window.

Change the encryption strength to 128 bit
type in a seriously obscure passphrase, i.e. w7h*g%o (or something similar)
      Click the generate button
      Copy Key 1
      Click apply
Paste it into the windows configuration applet

As above, but if that doesn't help, stop using WZC and try the utilities provided with your wireless adapter. I find them almost always simpler to use.
