Question I need a wireless adapter for old pc

I think I need a wireless adapter for my old pc. I have a wireless router provided by Sky attached to new pc and my old pc is sitting redundant (Windows 98). Can I hook old pc up to the internet wirelessly and what equipment do I need and what problems can I expect to face?

Re: I need a wireless adapter for old pc

Assuming it's a desktop most people would recommend a PCI wireless adapter.

Better to use a newish one that supports at least 802.11g, then (in theory) all you have to do is apply the Sky passphrase (printed on the router) to the adapter's WPA wireless encryption interface and you're away.

Of course, this being wireless, other stuff can happen. Probably the biggest hurdle is if the old computer is on an ancient version of Windows -- XP, ME are good, 2000 and 98SE aren't too bad -- 98 and 95 may not be worth the trouble.

You will probably struggle to find a USB adaptor that supports windows 98 , i recently installed one on my sons PC (windows 98se) with no problem.

You may find it easier going for one of these - Amazon.co.uk: IBM High Rate Wireless LAN PCI Network adapter: Electronics & Photo

I think Maxping must be a millionaire -- 125 is not what most PCI adapters cost. The same site has Linksys models from 13.

Thumbs up Re: I need a wireless adapter for old pc

Hi fihart and maxping and many thanks for both your help. I posted the original question under y.poole but was unable to access this membership as my email address no longer exists and I needed it to find out what my password was! Anyhoo, followed what you said and I bought a USRobotics Wireless USB Adapter, 54Mbps(802.11g) from Maplins at 19.99 and lo and behold it did the trick! Eldest son now happily on MSN most hours of the day!
