      Wireless b: Encrypting connection

Using info found on these threads, I finally managed to get my laptop connected wirelessly to Sky router, but without any encryption. Presumably, anyone coming within 100m could use my system for access. In principle, I wouldn't mind that, but I am on the basic package (2Gb download limit) so could quickly run into a problem.

As I am on wireless 'b', it appears that I can only use WEP encryption, but can someone please explain how I do it.

      Re: Wireless b: Encrypting connection

Before the thundering herd of encryption enthusiasts descend on you, some thoughts....

Do not put the wireless router by a window (many do because that's where the phone line comes in) or you will make it easier for neighbours to pick up your connection.

Definitely apply some encryption -- WEP is weaker than WPA, but if you only have an 11b adapter so be it. I have the same and have experienced no problems. The only thing that puzzles me is that Sky apply WPA as standard so unless you are presently connecting by ethernet or have disabled encryption in the router, Im not sure how you've connected.

To apply encryption you need to address the router's user interface -- see the help files on the Sky CD.
