Unable to connect to the internet

A friend of my son is a regular visitor to our home with his laptop and has been connecting to our home network without any problems.

However, he's just got a new laptop (HP510) and when we try to connect it to the network, it connects but then keeps dropping the connection (every couple of minutes) and then reconnecting.

I've checked all the wireless settings on the laptop & everything is as it is on the other PC's in the house.

After putting in the WEP key, the laptop connects to the internet & goes to the default homepage. When we then try to load another website we get the 'The page cannot be displayed' window.

The wireless signal strength is 'Excellent', the speed shows as '54.0 mbs' and status shows as 'Connected'.
Has anyone any idea what could be causing the connection to continually drop & reconnect?

I have also just found out that the same thing has been happening whilst at his own home - doesn't sound like a local router issue.

I was all out to blame the router before you said that - as, to be honest, mine does exactly the same with our laptop
      but hmm...

Re: Unable to connect to the internet

      Think I've found the problem........

.....the wireless adapter in the laptop appears to be goosed.

I plugged the laptop directly into the router & got a perfect connection. I then plugged a wireless USB dongle into the laptop & again it worked perfectly.

Everything is now running like a treat.

I would say delete and reinstall the card driver. Perhaps see if windows update has a new signed driver available?
      often sorts issues.

One of the most obvious and one of the first things you should have checked there to be honest.

Re: Unable to connect to the internet

We cured the constant drop and reconnect syndrome by turning off UPnP in the router. It's a fault in the firmware that's mentioned frequently here.
