Unhappy Help – In crisis trying to set up wireless!

Very new to the whole internet setup (so much easier when IT have it done at work), so please be gentle. I’ve tried searching for an appropriate thread but couldn’t find anything.

Anyway, I have recently got Sky broadband and have set up the system without a problem.

Due to wires all over the place (and poor location of PC compared to phone sockets etc) I also ordered a wireless USB adapter from 7dayshop – and that arrived today as well as the phone line getting changed over.

Now the adapter is just a standard IEEE 802.11g USB that I understood is suitable. But after installing the driver I’ve had a hell of a time trying to set the damn thing up!!!

I initially tried running through the sky broadband help for installing wireless on windows XP. However, when I try and sort out the ‘wireless network connection properties’ (where I’m supposed to select a ‘wireless networks’ tab – there is no tab!!

In my network connections (in the control panel), for the wireless connection it spends a few seconds saying ‘acquiring network address’, then says ‘not connected’.

Has anyone got any ideas?? – I assume it’s an issue with the USB adapter not being properly configured, but I haven’t a clue how to sort it out!!! – Is it really that necessary to get a NetGear (ie sky approved) adapter?

Re: Help – In crisis trying to set up wireless!

Sounds like you've ticked the box to Let Windows Manage Connection in Windows' Start, Connect To sequence. This disables some of the features of the Netgear utility.

If I'm right you need use Windows OR the Netgear utility -- not both. Personally I'd let Netgear do its job -- I found it easier to understand.

Note also that Sky send the router out with WPA encryption enabled. So pay close attention to that when setting up the wireless adapter. Alternatively disable encryption in the router until you've got the hang of all this.

There are useful tutorials here -- check out the forum and tutorials buttons (at top of this page).
