      EU Cookie Directive - May 2012

      There is a new directive coming into force May 2012 therefore we have now added a permanent notice to our forum pages, whilst viewing as a guest.
      SkyUser uses cookies. Under the EU Cookie Directive, due to come into force May 2012 - we are required to inform you of this fact. You can block cookies from this website, through your browser, however this may render parts of the website inoperative, specifically signing up as a new member. You can view our Privacy Statement here.
      What this means as a guest;

      As a guest, if you block our cookies, then you may find certain parts / features of our website will become inoperative. However, we are trying to ensure that if cookies are blocked, that as much content as possible, is still freely available. As a website, we truly do not mind, if you decide to block any of our advertising cookies. Our goal is to provide you with as much useful free information as possible.

      What this means as a member;

      As a member, if you block our cookies, then you may find certain parts / features of our website will become inoperative, as well as being unable to login and use our forums as you do at the moment. Again, as a website, we truly do not mind, if you decide to block any of our advertising cookies. Our goal is to provide you with as much useful free information as possible, but also allowing you to participate in discussion etc

      Why do we use cookies?

      SkyUser uses cookies for several purposes;

      • To allow members to signup, login and participate in our forums
      • To allow members to do speedtests and use our speedchecker for the recording of their results
      • As a free website, our adverts / banners (and some links) would set a cookie. If we are the 'last click' then we may get a commission from that advertiser / affiliate agency. This money is used to improve SkyUser as well as covering our hosting costs
      • For the purpose of improving our website by using Google Analytics, this allows us to view traffic patterns, number of guests, and most popular pages for example

      Obviously, we want to give people the choice to accept our cookies or to block them, hence the reason for this thread.

      There is also the need to obtain a user's consent for us to place our cookies on your PC, we are working on a way to perform this as soon as possible. In the meantime, if anyone would like us to delete their accounts, for the reason of privacy / cookies etc, (even though we don't want to lose any members) then please feel free to use the Contact Us - Sky User - The unofficial support forum for everything Sky! page, where we have added the option to tick for deleting your user account. (Your account would then be deleted within 24 hours)

      Update: We have now added this as a notice for every visitor to SkyUser, to consent as a member to us using cookies, please click the Name: cross.png
Views: 613
Size: 173 Bytes icon to confirm your consent, as well as then dismissing the notice.

      Update 2: Ways to block cookies in your browser

      To learn how to block cookies using Firefox, follow the link http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Blocking%20cookies
      To learn how to block cookies using Internet Explorer, follow the link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/w...net-Explorer-9

      Update 3: We have now amended the welcome PM that is sent on registering to SkyUser, to further remind people, that this website uses cookies.

      Thanks for registering at $vboptions[bbtitle]! We are glad that you have chosen to be a part of the SkyUser community and we hope that you enjoy your stay.

      Thanks Alan.

      We really don't want to be landed with a 500k fine lol

      The problem is the internet works on cookies, and when people block them, then things become broken. Even though the vast majority of them are completely harmless. However, we absolutely guarantee, that none of our users' data would be sold on anyway, ie anything that is put in their profile etc

      We are looking at ways on how we can communicate / implement this change better, but at least we have started the ball rolling.

      Re: EU Cookie Directive - May 2012

      As some of you have probably already noticed, we have now updated our cookie directive alerts to allow people to have the knowledge of the new directive and the cookies that we use.

      Whislt we realise it is not perfect so far, this is constantly being worked on, and will change over time, as we perfect it.

      Just a quick note to point out that, when the little pop-up/slide up message appeared, I'm pretty sure it said May 2011

      Thanks, should be fixed now. Its a pre built solution so to speak, so I guess some errors maybe present.
