Diamond Jubilee Competition Coming Up Very Soon

Thanks to an idea by Scubbie, months ago, we have an exciting competition coming up soon to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, however, we are not giving away any details of the prize yet, as it is not 100% finalised.

What we would like to do is bounce some ideas off our members, as historically, people have just entered who followed links off MSE type websites, where people's sole aim is to enter free competitions.

We were thinking along the lines of, you must have been a member for x amount of time and also have x amounts of posts type conditions, (as long as they are non spammy ones).

How can we make this fair?

As it is a Diamond Jubilee, make having 60 posts a condition of entry. That will not attract 'prize hunters' and will restrict it to real contributing members.

If you are going down the member for certain days route why not make it for 60 days.

Any chance of waiting until 6th May before starting the comp?

Although I've been a long time lurker I never posted until I jumped in on the fibre thread. Probably no where near 60 posts though (although this one gets me one nearer) I'm not about to go out and post on every available Therad to get my pis numbers up

I agree though, you should make it available to those that have contributed the most rather than those linking from another site just to take the prizes from those that use the site regularly. If I don't meet the criteria this time then hopefully next time - I'm sure other users would agree

The only thing I would say is, that alot of people just come to read and learn. I was a lurker myself for a while, and not everyone feels confident in posting.

So depending on the prize list, how about anyone who post on the day gets entered into a lucky dip? As well as the main competition? It may encourage those shy lurkers to come join the party..

Oh dear, I've been dropped in it again

My original idea was to celebrate both the Queen's 60th and the fact that the forum is fast approaching 60,000 members.

I believe that any encouragement for people to join in with the forum in a positive manner should be embraced. Those who have launched personal attacks in the past have found their privileges curtailed.

Regular contributors and lurkers will probably have seen the same questions asked dozens of times previously, but I know that to each person their enquiry appears to be unique or perhaps the content of the forum has become so large that it can appear too daunting to find the answers.

The forum attracts a fair amount of traffic already everyday now. I understand that originally Ged and Glenn felt that it might not take off.

The issue of discouraging people who might only join just for the sake of the compo was discussed as it was felt important to reward those who have contributed toward the forum.

I should say that people contribute to the forum not just by answering questions, but by asking them too. On many occasions I have seen an issue raised that had been bugging myself and I have learnt from the response of another member. I expect this is the experience of many members.

Its one of those things that as someone who post on just a small section of the forums it a bit hard for me to say what would work the best. As you guys know the forums best by managing all areas you can see spammers, lurkers and true posters. I think its safe to say that people who use the site would be happy with just the chance to win anything...

As for how can you make this fair? Someone people are never happy so I think you just need to work out how you will choose a winnner and not really worry too much. This is a bit of fun, shouldnt give anyone any headaches ;-)

If the prize/s that we have planned come off, it would be totally unfair for someone with 1 days membership and 3 spammy posts to win tbh

We have worked very hard to build this forum up, and we fully realise that without member's questions, answers, knowledge, we would not be where we are today without them.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and as Scubbie says, 60k of members is just our way of trying to incorporate them all, as well as that, saying thank you to you all, as well.

Hopefully, Sky are sorting a decent prize out, and we already have an idea of what it maybe.

I would (and I am sure the whole team also would) prefer it if it went to someone who has helped, and has also being a part of the last 6 years of SkyUser or so, which is in all reality, only a tenth of the Queen's time on the throne. (didn't mean that to sound bad lol) and not someone who has read the competition on a.n.other website.

I think the 60 posts is a great idea, maybe 25 days membership (Silver Jubilee) should be the limit rather than 60?

More details will become clearer soon.

60 posts and 60 days membership imho.
The 60 days should have past by the time of the jubilee for all the new members who have joined on the back of fibre.
I'm assuming the results will be announced in a timely fashion on the day of the jubilee ?
I was also going to suggest a 60 year old criteria for entry but some may say its fixed if a founder wins
