      We're On The Move!

Further to our disastrous results the other night due to a HDD failing in the main server, we have today bitten the bullet and ordered 2 spanky, shiny, super duper, brand new ones.

Since our inception 6 years ago (nearly), we have had only a couple of server moves, with the last one taking place 3 or 4 years ago.

Our current hosts are just awesome, (Melbourne Server Hosting) they have looked after us well, and after having to call them the other night, and then seeing their response, we have decided to stay with them. You just cannot fault their level of service.

I spoke to them today re 2 new servers, and we can get 2 brand new servers for exactly the same price as we currently pay, and we can keep both the old ones for a month FOC so it's a complete no brainer.

However the specifications far outweigh the older ones, and especially for the more technical peeps, these are the new specs.

      Dedicated Servers Specs:

      2 x Hardware:

Dell R210 II with E3-1220 Quad Core 3.10GHz Xeon® CPU 8MB Cache System
      2.0GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory
      2 x 250GB SATA, 7,200 rpm Hard Drives
      Hardware RAID Card

I am fairly sure the current servers are on a 10Mbps port, however the new ones will be on a 100Mbps port with a huge 2TB monthly data allowance.

I know the RAM is a little mean, but we have had 2.0GB in the old servers and it has served us well. Plus we can always add more in the future if need be.

The last time we changed over was a complete nightmare, as we had the old ones in France, and then had to transfer all the data from them to the the new ones by downloading locally etc - Whereas these are located in the same data centre so we should manage things a lot easier.

Obviously we may encounter some issues with the transfer over, and we would like to ask that all members / guests bare with us whilst we upgrade our hardware, to give you all, a better end result, as well as a hopefully, far speedier website.

We will keep you updated in this thread over the next few days or so, whilst we await the handover of the 2 new servers.

PLEASE NOTE: The changeover will affect all of our websites, including the SMTP service, which we will do our very best to minimise any disruption. But before we stop any of the services offered, we will give you notice on this thread.

      PS - If anyone would like to rent a server then feel free to use this link, and say we recommended you, as we will then get a little treat;

If you refer a colleague to us and they sign up for hosting services, we'll offer you a gift as our thanks. Choose from either a Ł50 (inc VAT) credit onto your account, an iPod shuffle or a case of 6 quality wines.

      Good news about the upgrade.

Will there be a short test period for some people (i.e. Beta Testers) to check things out?

I am surprised that the new one will have 100Mb LAN ports. With the introduction of FTTC & FTTP, the speed tester may struggle from time to time.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Yes - we will email everyone on the beta test team to see if they wish to help again.

I am pretty sure that is the pipe to the internet so to speak. (so in theory we have a 10 times increase in speed that way over the current ones)

4 years ago you had to pay extra for the 100Mbps link and you also had a stupid data allowance which we would have used too quickly (and then had to pay a fortune for everything over the allowance).

As for the speedtest, this is all done off site anyway, we use Cachefly for the download and upload tests.

pmsl of course, we ain't stupid.

It's like Xmas, Melbourne have just rang me to tell me the servers are being built as we speak (well configured) and we may get them later tonight possibly.

It was the same guy who sorted the other server's HDD out at 3:30am in the morning, and he is definitely a top bloke.

      Re: We're On The Move!

I have just contacted a couple of people who may be able to reskin this version of vBulletin into the latest version so it would look as similar as possible.

If so then we may take the opportunity to completely upgrade vBulletin as well at the same time.

      Re: We're On The Move!

We are currently copying all of the data off our second server, PLUTO to our new SMTP server, which we do not have a name for yet, invitations are most welcome.

      Once the data transfer has completed, (all 142GB of it), we will then start to reconfigure the new server, to then take over, and restart the following services;

      • SkyUser Radio
      • Games server (although not properly used as such recently)
      • And finally the SkyUser SMTP server

We are going to try and achieve the swap over of the SMTP server over night, (not tonight) so as to cause minimum disruption to our member's outgoing email services, and will keep you updated in this thread as to the timescales etc

Once we have sorted the above out, we will then start to work on the new website server, and gradually swap all of our websites to the new one.

We do have a bunch of members who have already offered to help us on the website changeover, as there will be a significant difference to the forums once they are served by the new server. Because of the new software we shall be using, we want to try and get things right, before we let it go live for obvious reasons.

If anyone else does fancy testing the new website once things are a little less hectic, give me a shout by PM - If I don't reply immediately I will do so once I get the chance or know more about the timescales.

We have a games server? wow! Is it like invite only?

I was going to recommend we host some sort of classic games on one of the servers like Counter Strike 1.6 or MOHAA. Keep it old school.
