      Server Maintenance

We need to install some updates later on tonight, and you may find that we go offline for a few minutes, once we restart the server.

The timeframe will be hopefully sometime after 10pm

      Re: Server Maintenance

It would appear that we have an actual hardware fault on the server, which is evident from the issues that we have had recently.

We are currently in the process of backing up the server and then we have to give permission for the hosts to change the hard drive, and then let them rebuild the data.

If we go offline again, there is nothing we can do until the data has been rebuilt.

      Re: Server Maintenance

It looks like we are going to be offline for a few hours whilst the data is rebuilt.

      See you soon! Hopefully.

      Re: Server Maintenance

Just to bring everyone up to date.

Last night we did some important updates, and then needed to restart the server.

We restarted the server, and unfortunately it would not reboot and so consequently, our website went offline.

We rang the hosts where we rent the servers from, and they initially told us the data was corrupt, but the hardware was fine. Therefore we had a very big problem.

We could not access the HDD to try and do a repair etc

Within 5 minutes of ending that call, they rang me back to tell me that they could infact restart the server using safe mode, and whilst doing that, they could choose a different partition to boot from. And that there was definite hardware fault with one of the HDDs

I had to make a decision on what to do, and at approx 3:30am this morning, I authorised the hosts to replace one of the hard disk drives, having spent about 2 hours backing up this website and database and downloading locally.

We have since had notification that this work has been carried out, and that all of the data has been rebuilt without any errors.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but this work had to be completed, but on a positive note, at least we have a brand new HDD and we now know that our choice of 'Raid' was a very wise one.

Thank you for getting it fixed at such an early hour.

I noticed that the sister forum & site (o2user.co.uk) had also gone down, so I'd assumed it was big.

Yup all the sites we host went down.

There's nothing more sickening than a dos box, and a ping command saying 100% loss for over an hour lol

Got to say though the technician I spoke to was sound, and couldn't do enough to try and help us sort things out, even at that time in the morning.

      Re: Server Maintenance

At least the backup procedure worked!

That would have been a disaster!

I trust that your research into a new server has been progressing. Any potential date for when it is going to be ready?
