I trust that your research into a new server has been progressing. Any potential date for when it is going to be ready?

      Hopefully before Easter.
We need to renew a software subscription for 3 pieces of software that we use, and once we have that, we can then start a fresh install on a new server, then backup the old one and then restore and then beta test to make sure everything is OK before we actually swap over.

Not looking forward to it though. The last time we moved servers was a complete nightmare.

It can be scary, but issues over the past few months appear to support the need for a new server.

I am sure that once the new system has been tested, all will be fine once more.

Hopefully the issues were to do with the HDD being on it's way out, which would explain a lot of things / errors that we were getting.

Yup - hopefully, we really need to upgrade anyway, the specs are so poor now compared to newer servers.

Could you have predicted just how popular this forum would have become when you set it all up initially?

I noticed that this forum appears to get considerably more traffic than the O2user forum that you host as well.

With a membership fast approaching 60,000, it has certainly been appreciated by a lot of people in the 6 years that it has been running.

The SMTP server was not affected by this work. As it is a completely different server.

      What error are you getting?

lol - We were chuffed to bits when we had 100 members.

O2user is dead compared to this one. One could conclude, o2 don't have any issues, or they do not have that many customers that need help.

Hopefully yes. We have always aimed to be a help forum, with or without Sky's blessing. Obviously we would love Sky to embrace us fully, but it's understandable, that they don't.

With over 825,284 pageviews (which is 51,510 higher than December 2011) alone this month, we are obviously doing something right.

      Scary stats!

With regards to the differences between the forums, I haven't looked that hard at the o2user forum to know what content it has posted on a regular basis.

This forum has a huge amount of posts relating to getting more from broadband connections. It also has an amount on the TV side, but the telephone side is reasonably quiet.

A lot of posts are related to hacking the Sky equipment one way of another.

Since O2 allow people to use their own routers and actually helps them to set them up, to a degree. I guess this could point to some of the differences.

      Re: Server Maintenance

Looks like a server move is on the cards.

We can get 2 higher spec brand new servers for exactly the same price that we pay now, and the hosting company will also allow us to keep the 2 old ones for a month free of charge to arrange the swap over of the data etc

      Watch this space.
