Abuse of the SkyUser SMTP service

This week we have had numerous complaints from our dedicated server hosts regarding spam email that has been sent via the SkyUser SMTP server.

One of the consequences of this person's actions is that any of our user's making use of our FREE service may or not actually get their email blocked from the recipients email provider, thus rendering the SMTP service useless.

However, we have taken all of the necessary actions so far to resolve this issue and to get our SMTP Server's IP address removed from any blacklists.

We have also now taken the following action:

      1. Blocked that person's SMTP access
      2. Reported that person's IP address to Sky's Abuse Team for a breech of his T and C's that he agreed to when he signed up to Sky
      3. Deleted his or hers SMTP account
      4. Banned his or hers forum account

We have gone through an awful lot of grief to actually complete the previous 2 actions, including at least 3 to 4 hours of our time completely wasted because of that person, as well as all of the inconvenience that that person has caused to the email recipients, as well as the associated companies, Sky, and our server hosts.

We pay nearly 300 a month to host this website as well as have our SMTP server on-line, and we have absolutely no desire to accommodate people who use our services, who either are out and out blatant spammers, or do not keep their security on their personal PC's up to date.

Please be aware, that any further instances of any spam sent through our SMTP server, will result in the following actions:

      1. We will ban you from SkyUser
      2. We will delete your SMTP account and block the corresponding IP address from ever accessing any of our sites or services again. This will then have undesired consequences in respect of anyone else using that IP address in the future being unable to access any of our services, but we have now had to take this decision, due to the seriousness of the actual situation. There were nearly 27gb of messages that we received from the admin control panel of the SMTP server, just telling us that that person had been spamming, in less than 24 hours.
      3. If any future spam is of a business nature, we will report you to Sky's Abuse Team, a) for spamming b) for using your connection for a business or similar as this is against your T and C's that you have accepted on signing up to Sky Broadband.

If you do use our SMTP service, please do not abuse it, and put at risk over 1000 other members' ability to actually send legitimate email.

We will continue to offer the SMTP server for those that currently use this, but we are now very reluctant to accept any further applications.

We have now suspended any further applications going live until Sunday evening (27th-Sept-09),
All applications received until then will be held until Sunday, this will allow us to put some more procedures in place to stop idiots taking advantage of our kind nature in future.

I can see what you mean, but the ads pay for the upkeep of this site and its facilities. We would prefer that people just didn't abuse what we offer, than to accept any money off any of our members. That alone, would make us very happy.

Abuse in any way shape or form is not really the best way to repay skyuser for such a great service! Shame on them really.

Although, Optional donations Win/Win situation for all parties.

No, we have always said this site and services will be free to users and we wish to keep it that way, we just don't want to loose our servers just because of some idiot spammer as that will be a breach or our T&C's with our host, unfortunately it is human nature to take advantage of kind nature.

I totally agree with the abuse scenario.

As for optional donations, we would prefer it if people who wished to donate, did so to our nominated charity page, rather than us receive anything.

Unhappy Re: Abuse of the SkyUser SMTP service

I really am sorry that your facility has been abused in this manner and that you have had to go to so much trouble to recover your good name (in email terms).

I can appreciate how you feel about it but it would be a terrible shame to remove the facility from any genuine applicants.

I know absolutely nothing about SMTP servers etc but would it be possible to restrict emails to, say, 100 per day from any one IP address? 100 should be ample for even a club to send out membership letters, newsletters etc. Personally, I could live with 25 per day or even less.

      Regards and best wishes,

      Felix

We don't want to remove the service, we just want to find a better way that we can identify and stop the problem from reoccurring again a lot faster. Once we have implemented that then we will accept new applications again.

As long as this spam attack has finally been stopped, then we should be OK as regarding the blacklists etc as we have taken the steps already to remove our IP address from said lists.

I know absolutely nothing about SMTP servers etc but would it be possible to restrict emails to, say, 100 per day from any one IP address? 100 should be ample for even a club to send out membership letters, newsletters etc. Personally, I could live with 25 per day or even less.
The only thing that we have implemented so far was that you could not send out to more than 50 multiple recipients in one go, ie from a mailing list. It would be better if it was so many per hour, rather than penalise those who may send a fair few emails.

I think it would be more prudent if we actually used a member's email address as the username rather than your forum name, as unfortunately the SMTP software doesn't show us the username of the person sending the rogue email, but if that person's email address is the same username as the from address on the spam email, it could then be more easily found.

      Thanks for the support.

Re: Abuse of the SkyUser SMTP service

Would it not be an idea to include a minor restriction of who can sign up for this service. You could either not allow anyone to use it until they had may 10 or 20 posts on the forum or they have had to have been a member for a set number of months. Either way this would stop people signing up just to use the service to spam as might have been the case here, or am I way wide of the mark ?
