BT Webwise and Phorm rolls out tomorrow

BT is commencing the technical trial of BT Webwise on Tuesday 30th September 2008. Full information regarding the trial has been posted on bt.com at BT Webwise | Home in line with our commitment to announce the start of the trial 24 hours in advance.

Invitations for the trial will be issued anonymously to a small proportion of BT's Consumer Broadband customers. For those who are invited to take part in the trial, a special webpage will appear in their web browser. This will give customers the opportunity to accept the invitation, decline it, or request more information. The trial will work on an 'opt-in' basis only - customers can only take part if they accept the invitation. To view a specimen invitation, please go to BT Webwise | Home. Users are always in control of the system and can choose to switch it on or off as they wish.

The trial will run for a number of weeks and is a technical test is to confirm that the technology meets our expectations. We will make a further announcement prior to moving forward with the service.

We've opened up a new thread for the discussion of the Webwise trial, please keep all new BT Webwise related discussion there.

      Thanks

I think the joke is BT are actually pushing this as a safety feature -
BT Webwise | How it Works

Unfortunately there are thousands who will believe it. If this was it's main purpose, as they imply, there would be no need to gather user information. Phorm under another name is still phorm.

I see they use "bad robot" practice in that if any bots are allowed to crawl a site then the Webwise bot can i.e you can't set a robots.txt to exclude just Webwise but allow say Google.

What you have to do is "request specifically that your website is not scanned by Webwise. To request that your website not be scanned by Webwise, please email: website-exclusion{at}webwise.com."

Re: BT Webwise and Phorm rolls out tomorrow

We have made it abundantly clear to Phorm to stay away from our website.

And lo and behold, looking at the server stats we see they have been visiting us.

Perhaps they have an issue with their Sky Broadband, or even, they cannot get their Sky Email sorted out.

Phorm - Get Lost! We do not want you, any further visits to this site and we will ban your IP's.

Coincidence or what, after you posted the thread telling them to get lost they reply to your email? Or am i being suspicious?

You're just being suspicious. Why on earth would Phorm do anything dodgy or malicious? As if.

Glad I left BT back in July now...it's amazing how they're mascarading the service to be of actual benefit to the customer!
If a user wants to know what sites are dodgy, install the WOT plugin for Firefox or turn on the phishing filter in IE7 (and above).
