      Downtime - Tuesday 13th May

We believe although not confirmed, the Data Centre that we have our servers in has just experienced a massive DOS

Obviously there is not a lot we can do in this situation, but it is an eye opener as to how many actual PC's around the world are actually insecure or infected.

Having just got off the phone to our Hosting Company, it would appear that it was definitely a DOS.

      Sorry for the inconvenience.

that's why I couldn't get onto the forums.

Considering that 20% of all PC's are thought to be zombied that puts the actual amount around 250-300 million infected computers.

      Time to worry indeed.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Me to, I did strike me as a bit odd.

No need to apologise NewsreadeR as it was nothing within your control.

Cheers Alan. I think they did very well to stop the attack within 20 minutes or so. Can take days sometimes.

Re: Downtime - Tuesday 13th May

Is the skyuser forum properly backed up? the boards.co.uk windsurfing forum that I also frequent, was completely trashed last week by a similar attack, the site was down for 24hrs and they had to roll back a whole month to get the site back up. A months worth of data completely lost.

Re: Downtime - Tuesday 13th May

We have our site completely backed up in different locations. Our main server is 'Raided' and we make frequent backups. Worse case scenario would be a few hours of posts lost etc

Having been hosted on a French Server and the hard Drive crashing, several Power outages etc etc We have taken great care in protecting our data and backing it up.

I must stress that the attack was not against SkyUser, it brought the whole Data Centre down.

Re: Downtime - Tuesday 13th May

It's a complete nightmare, as the database alone is nearly 500mb and then the rest of the site on top of that. We learnt our lesson well, using a free sponsored Dedicated Server. It just does not warrant being complacent or relying on others to look after your data. Especially when the server was only about 10 days old.

I think we lost about 4 days of data, plus all the inconvenience of resetting the server up, when the HD failed.

Ultimately, we want to bring online another couple of servers to automatically switch in the event of any problems in the future, but hey ho, it will have to wait.

LOL I know it can be a nightmare, I work for a computer company which was located next door to the buncefield oil depot when it blew up! It took out our entire data centre 250 customers systems! We had to restore the lot from tape back up's at Sunguards disaster recovery data centre. A picture of our building attached! lol. Lucky no-one was killed.
