Sky Fibre Max and Non Sky Router

      Hi All,

I am upgrading from Broadband Unlimited to Sky Fibre Max with an activation date of next week. Over the past month our broadband has kept dropping out, which warranted an engineer visit from Sky to update our internal socket. Anyhow, having ordered Fibre Max just over a week ago, I found out our activation date today and when asked, was informed we would not be getting the new Sky Q Router. Thus relying on the substandard SR102 Hub we have.

So today, I went out and bought an ASUS DSL-AC68U router and have configured it to work with Sky Broadband Unlimited this afternoon. All is working fine and finally we have 5GHZ Wireless network in the house! Which makes a major difference for our internal network.

      Anyhow onto my two questions.

      1) When Openreach switch us to Fibre, presumably it is straightforward to configure the ASUS router to use VDSL?
      2) I have read this evening that ridiculously Sky do not allow you to use a third party router if you are using Fibre. If I have set the Broadband port MAC Address of my ASUS Router to mirror the MAC address of the SR102 Sky Box, is there any way they can tell that I am not using their router. Obviously, if there was a line fault I would plug in their SR102 before phoning tech support.

      Thanks in advance

      Dave

There are many of us using third part routers and modems. Just keep your Sky unit in case you have issues and need help from Sky support , then you'll need to use it.

I suppose if they really wanted they can tell you are not using a Sky router; but they would have a large body of users leaving Sky broadband if they decided to enforce it.

You'll need to make a couple of changes when VDSL goes live. There are threads on using the DSL-AC68 on this forum.

I don't know if you are aware, but that particular modem/router has not proved to be very stable on VDSL, I don't know the latest state of play, but at one time it was to be avoided.

Many thanks for your response. I wish I had come across that info on this ASUS before I bought it. However, fibre max was activated this afternoon and touch wood, all good.
