Hey Guys,
I'm new to the forum so hello to everyone. I don't work in IT nor am I technically trained in any way - hence the unusual moniker!
I promise, however, that this isn't just another post raising the usual start-up probs & issues already well documented throughout this forum - I would really appreciate some comments and advice as to whether in view of my particular circumstances and broadband needs, it is worth me persevering with sky broadband or whether I should just cut my losses now, sack sky broadband and go with another ISP who lets you use your own router.
By way of background, I signed up for sky broadband 'mid' last month, having previously been with supanet on their 2 meg service which never 'fell over' once or gave me any probs whatsoever. Our home network comprising 3 desktops, a laptop and 2 xbox 360s was absolutely seamless. In particular, once I had turned on the UnP in my belkin router web interface, both the xbox 360s always had open NAT all the time, even when played on at the same time. The signal strength throughout the house (which is quite big) was good. For me, it was, I now appreciate, 'broadband heaven' - it simply always worked!
Now that I am on sky, I have the following probs :
1. Can only get open NAT on one xbox 360 at a time, the other is either moderate or strict. I've tried increasing the 'adverisement time to live' digit in the UnP section of the sky/netgear DG834GT web interface - I can get the NAT open on each xbox but this is always at the expense of the NAT on the other - can't get both open at the same time.
2. We recently got a PS3 and whilst the network test shows 'NAT2', it says UnP is unavailable even though it is switched on in the DG834GT web interface.
3. The signal strength downstairs is not good (the router is upstairs) causing laggy online gaming with both the xbox & ps3 downstairs.
4. My son can no longer play World of Warcraft - his character is unable to interact with others and he just keeps getting disconnected all the time - the probs only started after we had tfrd to sky.
I understand the NAT probs can only be alleviated by a different router as the DG834GT has aggressive NAT. In the circs, I've tried J Cardozo's URL injection hack but just got the message 'error 404 - file not found'. I managed to get into the cfg. file via doing a router back-up and opening the file with notepad but the adsl username & password is hidden. I therefore assume that even though I have the old DG834GT (not the new 934), my router firmware has been updated to close the access - my firmware version is :
V1.02.08.
What I really want to know is whether it is likely someone will come up with a workround to get the adsl username & password from the V.2 firmware in the near future?
I appreciate no-one has a crystal ball but just wondered if there are any rumours or murmerings amongst the technical community as to whether anyone is on the verge of coming up with an answer so that us V.2 users can be freed from sky's shackles. Because of my lack of technical knowledge, I have no idea how hard it will be for someone to come up with a workaround - if it is likely to take months and months, I will approach sky re buying out the broadband part of my contract with them as I'm simply not prepared to wait another 11 months before I can migrate.
Thanks for bearing with me guys. Any comments, suggestions and advice gratefully rec'd.
