Re: How to obtain your username and password from the sky router
Hey, would just like to thank people. Was able to get my old linksys router plugged, being far more reliable than the netgear router provided.
I did ring up Sky Customer help, but they flat out refused to give me the username and password, I expected just as much I thought I'd give it a try to see how they'd react.
Anyway, the router is running on a faster speed, its wireless connection actually works properly and I just generally trust it more over security and stuff. (Can't believe they don't give you the default username and password for the router web interface, have they not heard of drive by attacks?).
Anyway, thanks again for providing this useful information.

Re: How to obtain your username and password from the sky router
More thanks and much kudos to those who explained it clearly earlier in this (and other) thread.
I am now happily using my new wireless-N router at 150Mbps in my garden's summer house with 4 bars, playing games smoothly compared to the standard sky *******ized-pish router where i was dropping connections every minute or two feet from the router.
This forum really is the mutts nuts. Well done all who contribute.

Re: How to obtain your username and password from the sky router
Hi, whenever I try and run the netgear.cfg file I keep getting the message:
error 404
file not found.
Am I doing something wrong?
Cheers
Woz.

This neat little utility from a bloke at RouterTech.Org makes it all so simple! It can even open up a telnet session for you, monitor your stats, etc.

Re: How to obtain your username and password from the sky router
Actually, just speaking to someone on MSN who has already got the new firmware for the V1, it would appear that this utility has been locked out of the new firmware.
This also applies to all the other hacks that we have seen on here.

Hmmm ... I only got mine last week, and the RouterTech.Org utility worked just fine.

You have not got the new firmware on your router, it has not been released yet.
As per my answer on DS, the new firmware will block access for any of the know utilities. My understanding of the new FW is it will be optional and not a forced upgrade.
From RT RouterTech :: View topic - Netgear DG834GT Router Toolbox
Quote:
Yes, it is possible that Sky is able to upgrade the firmware automatically. And, yes, if they do so without your permission, then that would really suck. But I am sure that they would have covered themselves somewhere in their small print.
The Sky Netgear router is not supported by RT firmwares. However, any router running an RT firmware would be immune to any existing backdoor in the Sky-supplied router.
|
The present V1 router calls home to Sky during the day at predefined times, (this is with the Sky FW) Once there is a new FW then theoretically Sky, if they wanted to would end the session and then when the router resyncs would pick up the new firmware. This would only work on the Sky FW afaik.
Therefore if you hack / change the firmware from the Sky to A>N>OTHER then I would think you would be fairly safe.
We have had it confirmed by members of Sky who are beta testing the new firmware for the V1 that this does lock out all of the utilities around. We have also heard that the V2 has definitely been locked out for the same. Rumours have it as well that the V1 router FW upgrade will be an OPTIONAL / recommended FW upgrade, ie non forced.

Talk about a "back door"! I am already beginning to regret making this move.

Why? It is done over the radius servers afaik, so effectively not a loophole?
As per the calling home, did you not read the T and C's? Its all there in black and white.

Personally, I am happy to allow the upgrades to the firmware, if it sorts out known problems and enhances my Internet experience. It's not as if it allow anonymous incoming to check, it talks to the Radius Servers and if there is an update can be triggered to install / upgrade. I am sure those with problems with the V1 would be happy to have them resolved automatically, as I think we can all safely assume, the customers may not have the technical confidence to do it themselves.
