Not sure if this is relevant but I have just received this from the Sagem syslog when booting the router:

      192.168.2.1 04/05/12 13:19:02 04/05/12 13:19:02 system Error syslog "rupgrade:error:73.848:ruSendTtcRequest:1407:ttcUr l: http://fast2504n.skyfirmware.com/timecheck/?mac=[internal mac address]&firmwareVersion=FAST2504n_5.27.1a4N&model=fast250 4n&product=skydsl"

I have replaced my mac address with [internal mac address]

Re: Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

Did using the internal mac work instead of using the modem mac?

I got a feeling they are after the vendor ID now... Mine is a new sky bb contract and new router.

Had a log from my Cisco last night and it's not able to get an ip.. It did moan a bit about near end and far end vendor id's which is making me think they are after these now as well as my client-id option which was already set and the modem mac of the Sagam was being spoofed.

This could be cat and mouse for a while yet... Now I have to put up with a shie modem that starts to choke after a few days service and needs a reboot.. Oh joy....

The telnet Netgear hack earlier in the thread still works for me, no mac spoofing, no vendor id, it's just the dhcp-client-identifier.

      Dear UK,

From Customer replied, we’re hardly to define the 'MER VcMux Bridged' encapsulation format of 1483 MER in 7402X series.

      1. Could you kindly ask customer to use Ubuntu (Linux OS) try to Dial-up connection with SKY?

      2. Please kindly try to capture the wireshark packets from Ubuntu to see what kind of header format (DHCP Client) have been sent out to SKY provider.

The Topology sample as below and capture the X packets.:

Ubuntu (Linux PC) ---X--- Modem (7402X) ------ Internet ------ SKY

PS: Please set the router 7402X ADSL Protocol as “Pure Bridge”.

      Best Regards,

      Billion Support Team
Did anyone get back to you on this? I have a 7800N I could try, I connect via PPPoA but others on my exchange use MER so I would assume that it would work as the method is there.

Re: Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

I've pulled a list of magic packets from the Sagem and the only packet sent from the router within the Bootstrap protocol lists the following screen snips:

Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers-capture2.jpg

Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers-capture.jpg

(Mac's are redacted, needless to say this is the external WAN mac NOT the internal one)

I'm new to Telnet. Would you mind compiling a quick quick guide as to what you did so I can try it on my DGND3700?

I'll **** in the wind here and try that vendor id string in my config later on.

Good news for Billion 7800N users

As of today Billion have beta firmware available that works with Sky's implementation of MER. An official release should be available with a few weeks.

It can be found here:- Billion UK Forum • View topic - 7800N beta firmware for SKY (1483MER) NOW WORKING!
