Over the Christmas period I took my router with me to a friend's home. I tried to increase the speed, but her connection is capped at 15.8mb. As that is what she gets on her connection with 7dB noise margin and it wasn't my connection, I let it be.
Mine was like that and for some reason on 31/3/2012 DLM re-started itself and now I get 23Mbit/s with a 6db noise margin, I got fed-up of having to manually modify the DHCP client on my DG834 everytime it restarted and put the SKY supplied (2504n) router back on the line a couple weeks ago, no idea if that was partly the reason DLM got reset or something else triggered the system to re-evaluate my line.

Line connection testing completed on 04/04/2012, resulting in the following settings:

      Download speed setting
Your connection has been set to a download speed of up to 23.1Mbps .

      Upload speed setting
Your connection has been set to an upload speed of up to 1.3Mbps .

One thing I have noticed, comparing the backup file from a Sagem 2504n on MER and PPoA they are completely different.

The MER one does not contain the username and password etc

It wouldn't surprise me if they connected using a generic authentication or perhaps even via PPP first then once they're online pull an updated config from the TR69 management platform. It's possible that sky opted not to save this config locally during a backup to force the modem to have to "call home" everytime it was reset.

Re: Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

Well this is the final (very disappointing) reply from Netgear support:

Thank you for choosing NETGEAR, my name is Gerry from 2nd Level Technical Support.

I have read your case and I understand that you are experiencing a problem with your DGND3700 wherein you cannot get it to work with your Sky Fibre MER connection. I apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced. Since we are doing this online, it may require a few e-mail exchanges before we can resolve the issue. Please be assured that I will do my best effort to help resolve your case in the least amount of time.

It seems that the MER authentication is new protocol used by Sky which is not currently supported by our routers. I will just inquire this feature request to our product engineers, if this will be supported in the future firmware releases. Kindly wait for my update.

      >Hi
      >Do you know when a reply is expected from the engineers?
      >Would it be possible to test a beta firmware?
      >Thanks.

      >>This is John from NETGEAR Level 2 Technical Support and I am responding in behalf of Gerry.
      >>MER is not yet supported by NETGEAR DSL routers. There is no beta firmware provided yet and I am not sure if they will add this on
      >>the NETGEAR DGND3700, this will be more likely be added to the version 2 of the DGND3700.
      >>Rest assured that we will verify this information through our Engineering.

Seeing as I keep losing connection between the sky router and Netgear, and this apparent indication that Sky users aren't significant enough to warrant the attention Billion have afforded their customers I am now on the lookout for a billion router. Shame they don't do a 5G version though.....

I might fire off a final email to Netgear in the US to voice my feelings though, anyone know who to contact?

Does anyone know if Billion will be extending Sky MER support to their other models?

Is there any further progress with Drayteks?

Hey, anyone any experiences with DD WRT or Open WRT if something similar can be done using COmmand Line with them as you can with Tomato ?

      Cheers

Re: Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

      Try this

obviously you need to change eth1 to whatever your DD-WRT router has as it's wan interface and change the username / password as appropriate.

I'm also not sure if the paths will be correct on other devices as I don't have any other DD-WRT enabled devices to hand to test.

      Code:
      killall udhcpc
      /usr/sbin/udhcpc -i eth1 -c "username@skydsl|password" -p /var/run/udhcpc.pid -s /tmp/udhcpc

      WNDR-3300 DD-WRT v24-sp2 std (c) 2010 NewMedia-NET GmbH
      Release: 08/07/10 (SVN revision: 14896)

My Startup script now looks like this.

      Code:
      ifconfig eth1:1 192.168.16.3 mask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.16.1
      killall udhcpc
      /usr/sbin/udhcpc -i eth1 -c "myusername@skydsl|mypass" -p /var/run/udhcpc.pid -s /tmp/udhcpc
My Firewall script looks like this.

      Code:
      /usr/sbin/iptables -I POSTROUTING -t nat -o eth1 -d 192.168.16.0/24 -j SNAT --to 192.168.16.3
The Ifconfig eth1:1 creates a sub interface on the wan then adds an IP in the range of my DSL modem interface

The firewall command then NAT's the traffic towards the web-UI of the modem to the address I defined in the ifconfig command, thus allowing me to access the DSL modem webui to check sync speed.etc

Re: Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

      Sorry for the Triple post

Just got this working with microtik routerOS 5.15 and a bridged dg834v4

It's a simple case of setting the clientID to

      username@skydsl|pass

Please note when using winbox it is important to NOT include the "" that you would for other routers.

Not sure if it not working with previous versions was just a case of not waiting long enough for the mac address to expire, or a bug with routerOS prior to 5.15 as I'm pretty sure I've tried this before and it's not worked.

Re: Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

Hi thanks just got a few questions

      1) did you enter the commands via telnet/ssh or via the admin interface?

      2) is the user name and password always the same I have 3 sky adsl routers and 1 sky fibre router, can I gra b the apssword from any of them or does it have to be the fibre one.

3)in the WAN setup via the admin site do I set it to Automatic Config DCHP

4)is the point of having the sub interface to allow to view the openreach modem to see it stats? and I take it the main iP would be the public WAN address, or an internal IP address matching the OR modem?

5)if I connect via telnet and go CD /usr/sbin/ and the do ls should I see an entry for udhcpc, as I can't see it will incude the output from telnet in the next post

      once again many thanks
