Real world performance much worse than router stats

Hi, thanks for all the help on this site. Very useful indeed!
I'm trying to increase my broadband speed, my router stats are ok:
      Downstream:
      Connection Speed: 13332 kbps
      Line attenuation: 16.5 dB
      Noise Margin 8.3 dB

      Upstream
      Connection Speed: 510 kbps
      Line attenuation: 8.5 dB
      Noise Margin: 23.0 dB

but whenever I test the speed using skyuser speed test (or other internet speed test sites) I get more like 2-4Mbps download speed in the evening . Right now (Sunday morning) I am getting 10184Kbps which is ok.
My computer is connected to the router via ethernet and I have checked that no other programmes are using broadband at the same time. I get the same results another computer at home.

So I am guessing this means that the connection from my local sky exchange to the internet is slow during peak times? Is that correct, is there any way to verify that and will all service providers suffer the same problem?

      Thanks

Your upstream is heavily capped so will have an effect on things

I'm mostly concerned about downstream speed. Are you saying that my downstream speed is slower because my upstream speed is heavily capped? Why is my upstream speed capped?

I'm baffled that your performance is worse in the evening. I didn't think SKY's LLU performance varied with time of day? It doesn't for me anyways, I get an almost rock-steady 6.5 Mbps whenever (morning, noon or night) I test it on broadbandspeedtest.net. And I wouldn't say Harrow (NW London) is underpopulated with internet sky users
You defo ain't get some sod piggy-backing your wireless (assuming you also have a wireless adaptor) during weekdays?

It shouldn't be an issue. The reason I say the upstream is capped is that it may affect the sending of the request to the server and, in the evening, if more people are online it might equate to a delay. Far fetched but it's a possible explanation

      Useless info deleted.

Can't think on any reason why an ethernet connection should be slow. If you are not using wireless turn it off completely as it is wasting resources and causing unnecessary heat, plus it can hacked

Are you definitely sure nothing else is using your ip address in the evening. As suggested switch off wireless completely so tha you know that the only thing possibly using the net is the attached pc to the router.

Whilst the router is synching at a good rate there could still be interference getting into the signal which is causing a lot of errors.

Try and pinpoint the exact time the speed deteriorates and then see if there's anything else that happens at a similar time that could be causing some interference.... heating coming on, street lights, anything no matter how far fetched it may be.

Is it possible that Lower Holloway has inadequate backhaul?
Any other members on this exchange who can do a speed test in the evening?

Re: Real world performance much worse than router stats

Yeah, I've made sure no-one else is hijacking my wifi when I test the broadband. I'm still gettting 2-3Mbs on internet speed test and 13Mbps in router stats. I'd be very interested if anyone else is connecting to this exchange to see what speed they get.
