VPN Server behind the DG834GT

Hello all

I have spent quite a lot of time reading info on these forums, as I have recently had Sky BB installed at home. Theres a lot of very informative stuff on here!

My last ISP in my old house was virgin - I had a cable modem connected to my own VPN Router - an RVL 200.

I use the VPN functions to remote-in from work and retrieve information from my home PC.

Moving over to sky, and being... hmmm 'forced'? to use their router, which does not have the VPN functions I require- I was a little put out.

I don't know if its anything people do themselves here, but its entirely possible to use your own router, with sky's router as well.

I've got the official sky router plugged into the DSL line, with a fixed internal LAN IP of 192.168.2.254.

My VPN router sits on 192.168.1.1. The internet port of my VPN router connects to one of the LAN ports of the sky router. The sky router, via DHCP, dishes out 192.168.2.2 to the WAN side of my VPN router - and I then tell the sky router to use 192.168.2.2 as a DMZ - thus forwarding all information to my nice expensive router enabling me to use VPN and all the other nice features.

It's a little complex and took some fiddling, but its enabled me to use my VPN and still stick with the sky router.

Re: Sky Router vs Non Sky Router

I did not think there were any problems with the DG834GT and VPN. The Sagem has given a lot of problems.

From the information I have received, it would appear that the VPN is being addressed in the new Sagem FW due out soon. (We all know Sky's interpretation of soon)

Re: Sky Router vs Non Sky Router

It's not that the DG834GT does not allow VPN pass though connections, my VPN is hardware-controlled by my router, rather than software running on a server.

Wouldn't a static IP on the DMZ interface of the RVL be easier? (Or are you using DHCP because it's not possible to configure it with a static IP on the WAN interface - it's not a router I know.)

It's not a VPN end point, unfortunately. You get what you pay for, I guess.

EDIT: I moved this to its own new thread.
