Intermittent access to some websites?

Can anyone offer any advice, I'm not sure if this should go on the list of sites that people can't access as sometimes I can access it.

I promise I'm not spamming the board trying to get visitors to my site, I do have a genuine technical problem

I am on the Radstock exchange (I guess that's the SSRAD in my tracert), and my IP details from my router:

IP Address 90.211.45.[removed by me]
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 87.87.250.81
Domain Name Server 90.207.238.97
90.207.238.99

On a couple of occasions in the past I haven't been able to get on my own website, which is being hosted else where. I can't connect to pop/smtp/ftp etc.

Whilst I cannot connect to it via Sky, I can connect using my mobile phone on T-mobile (it picks up emails and I can browse the site). So it's working on a different ISP, just not Sky. I can't get to it at the time or writing this, and I couldn't get to it at the same time last night. I can't remember times of day when it's happened before.

The site is mmmonkey.co.uk

Tracert output is at the end of this message. I have contacted Sky via their website to ask if they might know what the problem is. I stress, when I can't connect to it on Sky it does work on a different ISP at exactly the same time.

I have also contacted my friend who hosts the site on a server he leases out in case they can help

Can someone else try and see if they can connect, maybe try a tracert?

Many thanks
Pete

Re: Intermittent access to some websites?

Aaaargh, about 10 mins after posting, it starts working again. The tracert shows:

Tracing route to mmmonkey.co.uk [72.36.140.58]

1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms NETGEAR Support Home Page [192.168.0.1]

5 78 ms 77 ms 77 ms 67.17.198.201
6 168 ms 172 ms 168 ms savvis-1.ar1.NYC1.gblx.net [64.212.107.34]

12 221 ms 213 ms 210 ms evomon.com [72.36.140.58]

So it seems to stop at savvis.net, but why only when I'm using Sky?

Weird?

Pete

Re: Intermittent access to some websites?

Yeah, it's annoying that is comes and goes. The tracert points to a problem with savvis.net, but it's weird it only happens when I'm using Sky broadband?

I have logged it with Sky, and also my friend who leases the server that hosts my site has logged it with savvis also, hopefully one of them will sort it out

Cheers
Pete

Re: Intermittent access to some websites?

Hi. This could be DNS: a classic DNS issus is one that "spontaneously" starts working for no obvious reason. (ARP issues fall into the same category, FWIW, but they're much rarer.) I don't know what OS you're using, but if it's a MS flavour and the computer fails to resolve an address, the DNS client will mark the destination as not resolvable for a duration that escapes me! Simply flushing the DNS client cache with an ipconfig /flushdns would help in this situation.

Re: Intermittent access to some websites?

It is indeed MS, XP Home. I'll try the flushdns next time it happens. Many thanks
