Problems with DNS

Ok here we go my home PC acting up really bad so i deleted the partition and reinstalled windows xp on my com and after putting the drivers back on i found out i couldn't get on the internet at first i thought it was the driver but there all seem to be working no yellow question marks. At first it said someting about the ip address but i then entered it manualy now it says won't register with DNS, the ip and dns is the one the sky help line gave me it 192.168.0.1 or .13

My modem is the black netgear one v2 i think

I've already tried all the stuff with 4 different sky technical advisor and the one said it was the drivers that needed updating

Any help would be much appricated. Also i writing off a friends laptop not the one in question.

Just a quick add-on i've got the modem netgear v2 but theres also a 1394 net adapeter what is it and do there both need to be enabled???

Re: Problems with DNS

Try using OpenDNS rather than the Sky one. DNS is 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. If that works go to the OpenDNS site and open a free account which will give you a lot more protection.

Re: Problems with DNS

Kurn,

Are you sure that the drivers you put in are the right ones? What can happen is that drivers are loaded and it looks as though all is fine and working, but in reality it is a wrong set of drivers, so nothing would work.

Try going to device manager, right click on your NIC and choose uninstall. The system should then reinstall this on next boot. If it doesnt then you need to install the drivers again.

It can sometimes just be a bad install and so corrupt.

Another method would be to create a custom XP install disk and slipstream all your drivers and Windows updates into it. This then means that during installation, the installer will pick the correct (if not then the closest match) driver for your device. It should also mean that once done you should have no (apart from one or so) drivers left to install.

If this is somethig that you (and others) might like but dont know how to do, and demand is high enough, I could create a video tutorial on the matter for future cases.

Re: Problems with DNS

The 1394 adapter is your firewire card, or iLink if you have a Sony. It can be used as a network interface between 2 PCs. No need to worry about it.

I agree you should go to the Device Manager, expand the Network section and uninstall your network card. (Just leave the 1394 entry) Right click choose uninstall, then right click my computer at the top and select 'Scan for hardware changes' It will be found and reinstalled immediately. This should clear any changes you have made to the LAN properties, so try connecting first with the default settings.

Re: Problems with DNS

TomD,

I would ideally suggest a reboot to be fair. This will allow the OS to unload any DLL files stored inthe systems memory which may possibly cause another bad install of the drivers. The chances are minimal, but just to eradicate it as a possibility a reboot would be best.
