Setting Up D-Link DSL-2640B

Can anyone help me with the set up of this router.

I've followed all the instructions I can find here,I've got my username and password etc,but when I try to set it up I am getting a red light on the internet connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Note: If anyone is having a sense of Dejavu over this thread I copied a lot of it from another members post who was having the same trouble but resolved the issue without saying how, I've contacted that member to try find out what he did but thought I'd see if anyone else could help.

Re: Setting Up D-Link DSL-2640B

ive been running one of these since last christmas on sky. Firstly download the latest firmware from the dlink site as it allows mac filtering on the wireless. Its quite easy to set up using the wizard and choose easynet as the isp but be careful as the wireless is open and visible free for your neighbours to connect, either switch it off or use wpa/wpa2 and i have the network hidden with mac filtering as well. Its quite easy to configure the rest when you have it running.

Re: Setting Up D-Link DSL-2640B

Thanks for the help nobby, I upgraded the firmware which has allowed my to see more detail on whats going wrong, looking at the diagnostic page it is failing on authentication.

Do you actually need to enter a username and password whilst going through the setup wizard for the connection, and if so is it the same one that SKY give you to access your email account?

Cheers,

DreddMetal

erm no it's your adsl password and user details that are coded into the routers.

Re: Setting Up D-Link DSL-2640B

Hi, no its not the email password you need and sky wont give you the dsl pass details, you need to extract it from your router. I have the V1 version so its quite straight forward. Im not sure about the later routers but info is on this site. Your login will be some thing like 00********@skydsl
password=1*******06. The wrong details will be the reason you cant connect. I much prefer the dlink to the netgear

Re: Setting Up D-Link DSL-2640B

You've been really helpful thanks nobby, sadly the router SKY sent me is a Sagem F@st router which apparently are they hard to extract the passwords from, does anyone here know how to do it? I'm looking all over atm but can't seem to find much help.

Cheers

Re: Setting Up D-Link DSL-2640B

For those wondering what happened with this I finally worked up the courage to ring SKY tech support and go through the farce of sorting this out.

After 10 minutes of explaining that the userame and password I needed wasn't the one for accessing the SKY routers admin pages the guy on the other end basically told me they do not have those usernames and passwords on their system and that no-one does so it is impossible to obtain them, even if they did they would not support me if I used another non-SKY router (no matter how many times i told them I didn't need their support).

Eventually I got through to a manager who basically reiterated what the last person had said, trying to think out of the box I told them about the trouble I have been having with my sagem f@st router not allowing me to change the settings and that if I could be sent a replacement, only could the replacement be one of the older netgear routers that SKY use as I wasn't happy with the sagem (thinking I could crack that to get a username and password). This looked promising as I was put on hold whilst the manager went to see if this was possible, sadly it wasn't as they no longer send those out and don't have any in stock (which I didn't quite believe).

After a lot of farcing around they are going to send out a new Sagem F@st to me to replace the one I have as it genuinely doesn't allow me to change any settings, whilst going through the process of ordering one with the orginal person I spoke to he kept going on about how these routers are the top of the range and are really good and it was strange that I was having trouble with it, I had to cut him short in the end and go on a little rant basically explaining to him that their routers are most certainly NOT top of the range because it won't do what I want it to do!

Sadly I couldn't pull the "I want to cancel my contract card" as my parents wouldn't let me

So it looks like I'm just gunna have to wait until someone figures out how to crack this thing or try buy an old SKY netgear off ebay or something, either way I'm not a happy bunny and can't believe SKY get away with this.
