Swapped Netgear v1 for Sagem router

I've just exchanged my original Netgear v1 router for a Sagem router.

I'd extracted my User Name and Password from the Netgear v1 without a problem. However I have no way of entering it on the Sagem. The Sagem has connected to the Internet without a problem as it's User Name and Password are obviously valid. But is that the way it works? I'd assumed my originals were the ones I'd have to continue using. Also if I attach a third party router can I use either set of User Name/Password combination from the original Netgear or new Sagem?

Re: Swapped Netgear v1 for Sagem router

When you say that you have exchanged your Netgear router for a Sagem one, is it Sky who gave you the router? Or is it one you've bought off eBay?

The ADSL user name and password are specific to each router, not to each customer. So if Sky supplied you with the Sagem router, then you should use that without trying to put in a new user name and password (which you can't do anyway).

If you bought the Sagem router off eBay, you're effectively using the credentials that were assigned to a different customer, which is definitely not recommended. The only solution to that would be to flash the router with standard Sagem firmwaer.

Re: Swapped Netgear v1 for Sagem router

Thanks James67. Yes it was unused and came off ebay for £8 delivered - I bought it as a 'spare' in case of an emergency. As my line is Sky ADSL enabled I guess any valid User Name / Password combination will work but I take the point about it been originally someone else's (unused) ID. I did try backing up the configuration hoping the User Name might me in there somewhere (and an edit might be possible) but examination with a text editor showed it wasn't!

Re: Swapped Netgear v1 for Sagem router

Sky don't seem to have very good control of user names and passwords. They don't appear to remove the user names and passwords associated with routers which have been replaced as faulty, for example. I'm not sure whether they're going to tighten up on that kind of thing. They ought to really, and when they do, you could suddenly find yourself with no Internet access.

So you've basically got two options. You can put the standard Sagem F@ST2404 firmware onto the router, or you could download and install the new firmware for the Sky DG834GT (if you haven't done so already). There's very little to choose between the Sagem router and the DG834GT (well, provided it's running the latest V1.03.87 firmware). They're both based on the BCM6348 ADSL microcontroller.

Re: Swapped Netgear v1 for Sagem router

I wasn't aware that the two routers used the same Broadcom chip. I must admit I've had problems with Broadcom mini-pci cards for WiFi in the past!

As I said the Sagem is only for emergency use. As yet my Netgear v1 router hasn't upgraded to the latest firmware. However I plan to swop back to it for daily use, probably tonight.

Many thanks for your helpful comments.

Re: Swapped Netgear v1 for Sagem router

Sorry, they both use the same Broadcom ADSL microcontroller, but not the same wireless circuitry. The Sagem uses a Broadcom wireless controller while the DG834GT has an Atheros mini-PCI card.
