Thumbs up Sky Tripple Play VDSL Roll Out

Just received ITK info that Sky VDSL trials will start Q3 this year through BT Sub Loop Unbundling at street cabinet level which means that Sky can place a cabinet within a few hundred metres of subscribers, containing 24 Mbit/sec VDSL kit!

Homer Simpson: Welcome to the internet, my friend, how can I help you?

Comic Book Guy: I'm interested in upgrading my 28.8 kilobaud internet connection to a 1.5 megabit fiber optic T1 line. Will you be able to provide an IP router that's compatible with my token ring ethernet LAN configuration?

Homer Simpson: [stares blankly for a few seconds] Can I have some money now?

Re: Sky Tripple Play VDSL Roll Out

That's a really interesting development. Is it part of Sky's plans for IPTV or just an improvement to their Broadband? Seems an expensive exercise if it's only the latter.

Re: Sky Tripple Play VDSL Roll Out

Nice idea and sounds easy if you say it quickly!!. Apart from the technical side, I await Sky's planning permission applications for the street cabs with interest.

Re: Sky Tripple Play VDSL Roll Out

According to this Ofcom page, LLU operators are entitled to install equipment in the street cabinets just as they're entitled to install equipment at the exchange. It's difficult (at least for me) to see how that works out, because the cabinets don't tend to have much in the way of free space.

And I can't really see what the motive is for this. IPTV services can run just fine over G.DMT broadband connections (provided they're not using an "over the top" method). Maybe they are just thinking years ahead, when things like HD will be the norm.

Re: Sky Tripple Play VDSL Roll Out

Sorry for the somewhat vague post but I am restricted to only posting further details that are in the public domain.

Link here for further Sub Loop Unbundling info from BT Openreach.

Any operator with a Telco License (i.e. Easynet who are owned by Sky) will have the code powers to install Street Cabinets.

All I can say is that the trial is likely to be in South London.

Re: Sky Tripple Play VDSL Roll Out

There is truth in this then, with the news story on Digital Spy about Sky trialling FTTC.
This is exciting news but only if Sky commit to a large scale roll out that would benefit most of the country. With the current economic situation, I can't see that happening for a while yet.
