Use Sky router as modem only?

I asked this question in the sky broadband help forum, and I got an answer, but I'm not sure if it will work. I figure the guys in here would be better at confirming this.

I want to get either a linksys WRT54GL or a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 and put the tomato firmware on it.

That way I should be able to put it in the DMZ of the Sky router and ssh into it from outside.

The main reason I want to do this is to be able to send WOL packets to my PCs.

Can anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work?

Re: Use Sky router as modem only?

On a standard DG834 not sure about the GT you would use this hidden page ( http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm ) to configure BRIDGED mode, but thats been either disabled or removed from the Sky firmware so unless you can telnet in and change the mode then your going to have to flash your router with non Sky firmware to see if the hidden page works but then you'll be breaking the Terms and Conditions.

Re: Use Sky router as modem only?

Can you explain why it has to be bridged mode?

Can't the Buffalo router (I've now ordered it) just sit inthe DMZ like a PC would so I can ssh into it?

Re: Use Sky router as modem only?

Sorry I mis-read your post as you mentioned the netgear as a modem. I thought you was trying to use the Buffalo in PPOE mode where the netgear was just a modem with the Buffalo doing the authentication thus taking the netgear NAT Firewall out of the equation.

Can't give you an answer on what your proposing as I've never tried it.
Maybe one of the mod'd firmwares for the Netgear will do what you want without the need for a 2nd box?

I didn't want to violate the Ts & Cs though.

I didn't know what you described could be done, and that would probably be better. But if it means violating the Ts & Cs, I'll pass until it's clearer what Sky will do to naughty boys.

Re: Use Sky router as modem only?

Yes I beleive you can set your secondry router as the DMZ and ssh to it. I had a similar setup only I had a computer running isa server as the internal gateway for my clients. I could connect to all my services on my isa server without any need for any extra configuration.

I'd be curious to know if theres any advantage to running it as a modem rather than placing setting up the DMZ.

Re: Use Sky router as modem only?

I now have all the equipment, but I can't get it to work.

I have a feeling I know what's going wrong.

I suspect when you remotely ssh into a router, you'll be going through the WAN interface, which I'm not using on the Buffalo.

I thought I could set the WAN port up with a static address on my 192 network, and put that address in the DMZ, but that didn't work either.

Any ideas?
