Re: Ive done it! Flashed router and got my sky password!

can i ask that the OP add a note to the original thread that this doesnt work in vista?

the netgear website states that its "not tested" but it doesnt actually state it causes your PC to BSOD during flashing and turns it into a brick

ive had exactly that, and searching the net (and these forums) has revealed several other users that have had the exact same thing. The flashing software doesnt work on vista and bricks your router.

just to clarify, im not blaming anyone here, and im not sore, Just want to save any other vista users from bricking their router

Re: Ive done it! Flashed router and got my sky password!

Just an update on my post (115) I have now tried with an Intel Pro and the graphic distortion has gone But it is still not working, the card is unable to find the device to upgrade and just shows a blank pane I will put it aside for the moment till I get another PC to try it on, but it looks like I wasted a whole fiver.

Re: Ive done it! Flashed router and got my sky password!

Make sure the router is in its "receptive mode" with the alternating flashing lights. And temporarily disable any firewall software on the PC - that might be impeding communication between the router and the PC. And you seem to have to run the RmDrv program again if you've rebooted it since the last time you used it. Probably easiest just to run it every time really.

But I'm guessing you'll have tried all that already. I really am stumped. I'll have to see if I can dig out my old Ethernet hub so I can monitor what exactly the PC and the router are supposed to be saying to each other. That might give me some clues about what might be going wrong for some people.

^^^^^^
Just about everything that is known about flashing the router and succeeding and failing is contained in this thread, have a read through it. You may find what you are looking for, or then again, like many others, you wont. The warnings about flashing this router are not given lightly.

Re: Ive done it! Flashed router and got my sky password!

I wonder if you can clarify something? I am trying to flash my DG834GT router so it returns to the original Netgear factory settings.

I followed your link to the Netgear website and downloaded the file dg834gt_1_02_13.img (the latest firmware update) I then tried to extract it with WinRAR, but it says that there are no files to extract.

I obviously misunderstood your advice. Can you tell me whether to find the file you meant me to have?

Re: Ive done it! Flashed router and got my sky password!

I have just managed to overwrite the Sky firmware to that the proper Netgear firmware is installed on my DG834GT:

1) dowload the newest firmware from the followiing website:
Support Page

2) Dowload the recovery utility from:
Support Page

3) After you unzip the recovery utility make sure the latest firmware img file is in the same directory.

4) Turn your router off, hold the reset button IN, re-connect power until the two left-most symbols flash alternately.

5) Double-click UpgradeWizard.exe file on your computer. Click Next
6) A screen with "Adapter Card Lists" appears so choose the card that connects to the machine you are using and click Next
7)There should be one and only one item in the Device List. Click Next. (if it doesn't appear first time cancel and go back to (5) mine worked the second time) Click Next
8) Click Upgrade. Wait - it takes a while before the dotted line begins and a message tells you are successful.
9) Click Close to complete the recovery.
10) Turn the router off and after 10 secs restart.
11) Log-in at 192.168.0.1 with admin and sky (if not try password).
12) You now have to set up all the data supplied by your ISP.

The link in the first post had a RAR archive with all the files you need. But personally, I think the easiest thing to do is to copy the "DG834 Recovery Utility" folder (found in the "Utilities" folder on the Sky CD) onto the PC, delete the DG834GT-1SKUKS_V1.02.28.img file and then copy the .img file you want to flash the router with into that folder.

Can't for the life of me understand why people post RAR files when they could post the far more familiar ZIP file instead.

Maybe it's because they had to pay for it, whereas many ZIP utilities are free
