Confused over speed Results i'm getting

Hi

I am new to the forum so go easy on me, I recently ordered sky broadband max as I also have sky TV and sky BB seemed like a good idea.

Anyway I have had it officially since the 28th Jan 07 and everything seemed fine and I was getting good download speeds averaging 600K which I was happy with for a 6Mb connection.
I now only get around 50-70k even though my line is syncing at 6.5MB.
When I was with Bulldog I frequently got 6.5Mb with no problems for around a year.

I have added the detailed netgear stats if anyone could advise me that would be great.

That's a bit confusing - what units are you quoting in

If you're saying that your router was connecting at ~6000kbps and were happy with a 6000kbps download then you are rewriting the textbook as a download speed that equals your connection speed is an ADSL impossibility.

If you'd like someone to comment please post actual figures and an indication of your set up e.g. wired or wireless, master socket or extension.

With reference to your stats, you're on G.DMT not ADSL2+. With an attenuation of 43db, provided your line is relatively noise free, I'd expect a connection speed of ~8000kbps on D.GMT and ~9250kbps on ADSL2+ so personally, I'd be happy with G.DMT as the speed difference is fairly insignificant and G.DMT will probably give you a more stable connection.

Your error levels are fairly low but you probably have a noisy connection as you are syncing below the expected figure. Try your test socket.

Talking Re: Confused over speed Results i'm getting

Hi Saturday

I meant to say transfer rate I was referring to.

Download Speed: 580 kbps (72.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 431 kbps (53.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

That's what I get when I run a speed test here Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed

My setup is Wireless and Mastersocket, I tried the TCP/IP optimizer and this made no difference.

Re: Confused over speed Results i'm getting

OK - well you are connecting at 6656kbps so allowing for transmission overheads you should be able to download at ~5650kbps.

You're getting not much more than 10% of this. The shortfall is almost certainly due to your wireless set up - you can check whether this is true by connecting by cable.

Wireless is almost always disappointing on a high speed broadband connection. Your card may tell you it has a good connection and is "connecting" at xyz. What it actually means is that's its signal rate which is different from the transmission rate.

You may see some improvement to your wireless connection if you experiment with changing channels, the router position and the aerial orientation. But I doubt it will work miracles.

Hi Saturday

You were absolutely right it was my wireless setup affecting my speed, all I changed was "Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)" on the netgear wireless config page and the results speak for themselves.

Download Speed: 5775 kbps (721.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 652 kbps (81.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'm not sure if you can shed any light on why this would affect the download speed not broadcasting the SSID?

Well that's very interesting.

It could be something for everyone else having wireless problems to try.

(Is the Sky router set to broadcast or hide SSID by default?)

Re: Confused over speed Results i'm getting

Hi Steve

It is set to Broadcast by default, I changed it when I changed my wireless security to WEP as my Nintendo Wii would not support the WPA-PSK default that the router was preconfigured with, although it didn't happen immediatly or maybe I did't notice it until I started to download heavy data.
