Question Internet ok but gaming slow with lag

My internet speed is coming out at 12mg which is fine. But as soon as I try to play FIFA it's lag lag lag and disconnections. In fact connecting to my mobile phone as a hotspot wirelesss connection works better than Sky broadand for the game!

With sky I am getting a bad ping of 103ms to the EA server and sometimes (once in every 10 approx) it jumps to 500ms! Jitter is bad as well at about 5-12 on average.

However the game plays better on the mobile connection despite really bad ping times listed below!

      MOBILE PING:
      PING easo.ea.com (159.153.234.54): 56 data bytes
      64 bytes from 159.153.234.54: icmp_seq=0 ttl=102 time=658.156 ms

      *******Now....
Here's the router stats for sky wireless connection through master socket with nothing else going on in the house:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collision Pkts Tx b/s Rx b/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 328265 374740 0 160 160 15:09:01

      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12766 kbps 1291 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 dB 18.5 dB
Noise Margin 3.6 dB 4.4 dB

      which i think look normal.??

I can't explain this, but something is wrong with my connection to the game, wired or wireless through the router. It is slow and unresponsive ALL the time, not just at peak times. It's like playing with men running through treacle, with the turning circles of battleships! Through the mobile everything seemed faster and more fluent. I am disconnected from opponents before games. Fifa i am told works on a peer to peer basis so not sure why there's a problem and if the EA server ping of 100ms is relevant.

So i tried a TraceRoute on my mac to see if there's a delay. The sky router can't get past the first 4 steps and just gets *** after that. Like this:

      Traceroute has started…

traceroute to easo.ea.com (159.153.234.54), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
      1 skyrouter.home (192.168.0.1) 1.367 ms 1.587 ms 1.765 ms

I know it is no help, but it seems the biggest delay occurs after the jump to Florida. These are my results.

The hops from 8 to 14 are all in Florida.

Is there no way you can play on UK or even European servers?

I notice you are on the old Easynet network, I wonder if that is part of the problem.

For comparison, these are the results I'm getting:

      PING 159.153.234.54 (159.153.234.54): 56 data bytes
      64 bytes from 159.153.234.54: seq=0 ttl=119 time=98.181 ms

      64 bytes from 159.153.234.54: seq=2 ttl=119 time=98.410 ms
      64 bytes from 159.153.234.54: seq=3 ttl=119 time=98.378 ms

      --- 159.153.234.54 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
      round-trip min/avg/max = 98.170/98.284/98.410 ms

I used the tool on the SR101 to get these results.

How are you connecting to the Sky router? Others have found that it is better to use an Ethernet cable and not use WiFi for games.

Also who else and what else is using your connection at the same time? For example if someone is downloading any torrents or streaming any video content, this will afect your performance.

Here's mine using the routers ping tool:

4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
      round-trip min/avg/max = 109.3/109.6/109.9 ms

Is it just fifa and/or other EA games you're having trouble with?

Re: Internet ok but gaming slow with lag

Could this issue be anything to do with the recent ddos attacks on xbl & psn?

There are reports of ping / traceroute problems all over the web by gamers with several different isp's.
In more than one case it has been put forward that 'prolexic.com' who provide ddos mitigation are are at fault by, causing both high latency & 'black holes'.

Personally i don't understand any of this, however prolexic.com do show up twice in Isitme's traceroute above...

Re: Internet ok but gaming slow with lag

Thanks for replying. I am certain it's not my hardware or settings. Everything like that has been tried and tested and does not make any difference. I've tried with a VPN now in case traffic shaping was affecting the connection but makes no difference. This delay is constant all the time.
I don't think it's the easynet network as many more ppl would report it. I think it's something to do with how the game recognises a player's connection, because I noticed 80% of the time I am matchmaking with players from countries like Mexico USA argentina etc. This obviously doesn't make sense for speedy good connections. I think now it's something to do with the net programming on the game rather than Sky's connection.
