Re: can I get better speed

actually just picked up the phone and there is a massive hiss and the dial tone can be barley heard so I would imagine there is an issue with the line that sky need to look into

If anyone else has any ideas I would gladly welcome them

The speed hasn't changed but the noise margin has increased significantly.
This indicates a problem with the internal wiring / set-up.

If left connected to the master socket the line should be capable of around 10Mbps.
It's never a good idea to have a router on a normal phone extension.

Re: can I get better speed

When you say master socket, do you mean the Test socket which is behind the master faceplate? If not you should try it there, it may improve even more. Best bet would be to fit a filtered faceplate or a vDSL plate to the master socket and use that to connect the router. As Gymno says there is a lot of interference coming from the internal wiring, be aware that if you call out an engineer and the fault is internal, you are liable to be charged for the call out.
