      Try this:

      Using a corded telephone, plugged into the Test socket with nothing else, dial '1' and listen carefully for any noise.

      A small amount of background noise is to be expected as your line is very long. You may also hear a high-pitched noise, like a fax machine. This too would be acceptable.

      Any clicking or load hissing would not be desirable.

      Unless you have a very bad fault on your line you are not going to get much more. Your attenuation shows you are a very long way from the exchange, a few years ago you would not have got broadband at all. You might benefit from having the line mode changed to G.DMT, but it is doubtful.

      G.DMT??

      A problem I have with this forum is people talking as if everyone is technical minded.

      Re: Newbie I need help

      It is the lowest form of copper wire broadband to put it simply. Copper wire Broadband comes in three forms, it goes G.DMT, ADSL and ADSL2. Each form allows its own maximum downstream speed. G.DMT I'm unsure on, ADSL allows upto 8Mb and ADSL2 allows upto 24Mb. You don't really need to know the technical terms of definition, if you do then a quick google search reveals all.

      Re: Newbie I need help

      I was under the impression that G.DMT was ADSL and the it supports up to 8128kbps down.

      448kbps is the limited upload speed on the Connect package (also based upon ADSL), but that on Sky's own equipment, when ADSL/G.DMT is selected the upload speed is often higher.

      ADSL = up to 8mb
      ADSL2 = up to 12mb
      ADSL2+ = up to 24mb

      Might want to edit this then, Sky User - New Tools And Tutorials Section, and make it clear that the ADSL2 Line Speed Checker is actually ADSL2+ Line Speed Checker. Just a suggestion.

      On the other hand, chances are you're more than likely correct.
