Good evening folks, please see above the router statistics.

The problem that i am having is that the router reflects 8128 kbps however the speed tests that i have done reflect nothing near to that. I may be getting the wrong information here but i do believe that the speed test should be similar or a little closer to what the downstream is?

I may be wrong about that but could anybody suggest as to why i am getting?

      Any help is greatly appreciated!

You are not on either Sky Broadband Unlimited nor Every day lite. as your profile indicates.

You are actually on Sky Broadband Connect.

It looks like your throughput speed has been reduced as a result of you exceeding the limit.

Your connection speed is the maximum that you can get with the Connect package. If you could get an ADSL2+ package you should get 20mb or more. Use SamKnows to see if there are any LLU providers in your exchange as they should be able to give you an ADSL2+ connection. Otherwise other providers may be able to, provided that BTO has installed 21CN WBC.

Even if you have not exceeded your allowance(1.3Gb per day) you will find that you are still throttled during peak hours. Try a speed test outside these hours and you will probably get your full speed. As Scubbie says, if you do not have a firm assurance that you will be moved to Sky LLU, look for another ISP who uses LLU and ADSL2+.

Re: Slow Speeds - Require explanation and help :)

Thanks for the quick responses folks, i did think that maybe the package was Connect. Did a quick search on SamKnows and it turns out that nobody provides LLU in the area. The best we can get out here is standard ADSL, not good!

So realistically, the daily allowance of 1.3gb is getting surpassed every day, causing it to get throttled?

      Cheers

Re: Slow Speeds - Require explanation and help :)

There were some improvements made to the Connect package. For example downloading On Demand content should affect the limit. However if you do download too much each day over a few days, then this is why your connection speed is good, but the actual usage is slow.

It is also important to acknowledge that as a re-badged BTW product, you will be subjected to some throttling between 4pm-midnight during weekdays and all day at the weekend.

Since you are saying that your exchange doesn't have 21CN installed, connection speed wise you won't get any better else where. However not every ISP has the same T&Cs as the Connect package. It could be worth your time to look around for an alternative ISP.

Re: Slow Speeds - Require explanation and help :)

We had actually just recently switched from AOL to Sky Broadband with the hopes that it would improve our connection, however it seems my troubles actually surpass the provider itself and whittles down to the actual area of living. (Countryside can suck sometimes :P)

Thanks for the sharp replies folks, much appreciated! Another quick one, would my younger brother watching live streams soak the daily bandwidth limit? I know he likes to stick them on to sleep to, and im thinking maybe his complaining is down to his own doings!

      Cheers folks!

Re: Slow Speeds - Require explanation and help :)

All the traffic will add up.

A torrent download of an SD show which would normally fill 1 hour on a TV channel with ads will come in at 350MB and last 42 minutes. The equiveland HD show will be around 1-1.3GB is size.

It might be worth suggesting that other ISPs allow you to download between midnight and 8am or 9am without affecting your monthly limits.

Try to encourage your brother to use apps like the BBC iPlayer which will allow him to replay the content several times, so that he doesn't have to download it each time.

Also, it you have Sky TV and Multi-room, please do look at linking each Sky+ HD and SkyHD STB to your home network. There are rumours of good things coming early next year.

Brilliant, thanks for the response Scubbie.

We were going to go down the route of checking the wiring of the house, before i posted on here. But this really answers all the questions regarding the slow/throttled net speeds.

Bit of a downer but ach well Cheers again folks!

Re: Slow Speeds - Require explanation and help :)

There are many potential wiring issues. The stats from the Master & Test sockets will help us to confirm/deny this. If this is the case, then we can give some advice on where to take it and what may be involved. Some solutions are easy, some may require the expenditure of some money.

For now we just need to know the figures.
