Reduced speed

I've had Sky MAX for 10 months. Very pleased overall, but recently my downstream speed as reported by various broadband speedtesters has dropped to less than half its previous level.

Here are the stats from the router :-
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15323 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 18 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 13 db 15 db

Latest speed test result :-

Until recently the speedtest regularly reported between 10000 kbps and 12500 kbps. I've tried rebooting the router but the speed is still low by comparison.

Re: Reduced speed

The PC I'm running the test on is hard wired to the router.

Re: Reduced speed

Well there's nothing showing in your stats to give a clue to what the problem might be - they're excellent.

That means it has to be one of the following:
  • the router
  • overloaded test servers
  • a problem with your PC (interface drivers, TCP/IP settings etc)
  • legitimate bandwidth "stealing" (e.g. another LAN user, P2P/Sky anytime running)
  • non legitimate bandwidth "stealing" (e.g. malware, WIFI hijacking)
  • a Sky network/routing problem
  • you're the first Sky LLU customer to be throttled

Start with the router. First click "Sky Test" to get a new IP (normally does). Then try a new test using the Skyuser speedtest.

Next, although you've tried rebooting, there have been a few instances in the past where the router has needed a complete power off for 10+ minutes to get normal functionality back.

Re: Reduced speed

Have you checked for Spyware/viruses etc?

It sounds that something on the PC was using your bandwidth during that test.

Make sure no one is using the connection and do www.speedtest.net again.

*edit* I was typing the same time as Saturday !

Re: Reduced speed

Sorted

Switched off the router for 20 mins and got a new IP this time, but speed was still slow. I then tried a speedtest from another PC which is also hard wired and got 12500 kbps, so the router and connection are fine.

This PC is connected to the router via an ethernet switch along with a third PC which when tested was also reporting under 5000 kbps. So restarted the ethernet switch and bingo we are back to normal. I'm still going and run various other checks for malware etc just in case.

Thanks for the pointers folks.

Andrew
