Usual "am i getting the best speed" post?

Evening all,

Just wondered if any of you could help me work out whether I am getting the best possible speed, I don't really understand Line Attenuation, noise margin etc. I am meant to be on Sky Max, but currently a top download speed of ~100k/s. I am approx 1.5km as crow flies from exchange, but probably more like 3km in cable terms.

Master socket:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7968 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 7.8 db 14.0 db

Normal socket:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 960 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 7.9 db 14.0 db

Now even I can see something wrong there. Sorry if i'm in teh wrong section, point me in the right direction if need be. I am aware of the faceplate changes, shall have a browse at that. Although if there is anything else that I could do then feel free to let me know! Cheers!!

Is a pretty good synch rate. If you sort your other socket out, you should get the same sync. (they're about the same as mine) Just under 8mb opposed to 1mb or in layman's terms - 8 x faster than you are getting from the other socket.

See the first sticky in my signature. I wrote it getting on for two years ago now but much of it is still relevant.

A new filtered faceplate is always a good investment but you could consider removing the ring wire from your master to see what benefits that would bring.

Cool, cheers for the info! Whats the ring wire? Think I will go for a the faceplate option as it doesn't seem to complicated from what I have read on teh other posts in terms of connecting a router only extension and a phone extension...

*edit* ring wire = connector 3?? Shall have a play around. Can't believe the speed difference...here was me just thinking sky were rubbish!

Re: Usual "am i getting the best speed" post?

Btw, what's the root of the huge difference in speeds? Is it to do with quality of the internal wiring to the extensions or is it just a case of interference being picked up??

Re: Usual "am i getting the best speed" post?

Could be one or the other or both. If disconnecting the ringwire brings a big improvement then it will be interference - the ringwire can act as, in effect, a great big aerial picking up all sorts of noise particularly in the am radio frequency spectrum (not necessarily "actual" AM radio, just in that frequency range).

Re: Usual "am i getting the best speed" post?

K have bought faceplate, fitted faceplate (A/B) and now getting the same speed from the master I was before from my other extension i.e. just above 1mb, not the 8mb I was getting with the test socket. Have removed ring and reattached to no effect.

The extension is also below 1mb, exactly the same as before.

From master:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1248 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 9.3 db 13.0 db

Any ideas?

Re: Usual "am i getting the best speed" post?

A filter faceplate is best fitted and used like this.

(1) expose the test socket and check that all other extension sockets you have are dead (no dial tone)

(2) Fit filter faceplate, connecting extension wiring to the numbered terminals 2 on the faceplate to 2 at the extension 3 to 3 and 5 to 5.

(3) Connect router to socket on faceplate filter. BB signal will no longer be avalible at the extensions

Re: Usual "am i getting the best speed" post?

K have gone with the numbers instead and seems to have worked, back up to 8mb. Bit odd tho that it didn't work with the ADSL connections
