It was not contention that prompted the question, rather the state of the internal wiring of the building. You would not be the first to suffer poor speeds because of this.

Re: Well at least I am not the only one having speed issues!

Although it may not be immediately evident, there is quite a difference when plugged into your Test socket.-

Quote:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 8 db
Noise Margin 22 db 14 db
Potentially you could get over 8 Mb with these figures. If you obtain an ADSLNation faceplate and plug the router straight into it, you will see an improvement. If you do this, then phone Sky and ask them to raise your cap, you should see a improvement in your speed.

Unfortunately in the environment of flats there is a lot of scope for interference, so you may not see the full potential of your line, but you should see a decent increase.

How did you go about calculating the 8Mb speed? (genuine question). Someone in this thread earlier mentioned 13Mb given the figures, is there any reason why your estimation was so much lower?

As for difference in the Test socket I can see there is a difference of around 2db but surely this cannot increase the line speed by a significant amount as 4Mb.

Re: Well at least I am not the only one having speed issues!

The estimate of 13 Mb is based solely on the attenuation of 31 dbs. This would be quite possible with a good external line. My estimate is based on your existing speed plus the speed you are loosing by being capped. ie 21dbs - 7 =14 dbs, which is roughly equivalent to 4 Mbps. Any improvement to your external line would result in more speed, but it appears to be fairly noisy, due possibly to a fault.

Re: Well at least I am not the only one having speed issues!

My problem with Sky is the fact that they seem to have capped my upload and download speeds.
For months, I was around 4,000kbs down and 768 up.
Now it seems to be stuck around 2,800kbs and 412.
To say that I'm a bit peeved would be an understatement. It has nothing to do with the phone wiring or distance from the exchange. It is something Sky has done and when I'm paying for a service, I expect to receive it. As I have been with them for over 12 months, I'm seriously considering switching to an ISP who will deliver what they promise!
