4.9mb Connection speed on Mid - can I get more?

Please help - should I be happy with these stats on the 8mb mid-package from Sky?:

System Up Time 01:36:47
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 18708 29271 0 943 8582 01:11:25
LAN 10M/100M 52423 33704 0 11657 1323 01:36:44
WLAN 11M/54M 407 0 0 14 0 01:36:36

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4992 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 db 21.5 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 14.0 db

I'm using an ethernet cable and the test socket of the main BT socket. I used the optimiser as instructed on the improving speed thread, which improved my dl speed from 800kbps. My router also showed 800 kbps before I ran the optimiser, but I read it shouldn't help this?! I did recently complain to Sky without response though.

Speed tests come back at around 4.2Mbps & 350Mbps. I live in central Newbury and I'm connected to the Newbury exchange. It says I should get 6Mbps.

Should I be happy with this?

Many thanks

Re: 4.9mb Connection speed on Mid - can I get more?

Nope, if you look thru this thread you will see that an attenuation of 32 should support 16 meg.

Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained

As you are on mid this would be capped at 8 meg. However I would expect your nm to be around 10 ish. Somethings amiss.

Are you definetely in the test socket ( behind the front cover of the master )

Re: 4.9mb Connection speed on Mid - can I get more?

When you remove the faceplate do you have dial tone on your extensions? If they are dead, your external line is causing the problem. Plug a corded phone into the Test socket and dial 1 digit, can you hear any noise? If you can report it to your phone rental provider as a noisy voice line. Do not mention broadband, unless your rental is with Sky.

If you have the DG834GT as your profile says, go here and take your Detailed stats after running for a few hours, then post them here. -

Re: 4.9mb Connection speed on Mid - can I get more?

I`m on `Mid` living 1.5 miles from Exchange and get:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 21.5 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 13.0 db

My Regular Speed is 7 mg-- Down
332 kbps -- Up
Computer set up at Main Socket.
Fast enough for me.

Re: 4.9mb Connection speed on Mid - can I get more?

There's no noise from the test socket, but my extensions are dead. Do I need to contact Sky who I pay line rental to?

Thanks

Re: 4.9mb Connection speed on Mid - can I get more?

You will first have to go through the 'slow connection' trouble-shooting, with you router plugged into the Test socket, with Sky's Tier 1 support. They should go through the checks then pass you to CST who will do further checks. They will probably send you another router, which may or may not help or as you have Sky line rental, they may request a health check be made on your line. Make sure you tell them you have Sky rental, it may help.
