low & behold, i spoke to soon. this morning my phone rang & the internet cut off. took the socket back apart, put the blue with white bands onto point b & the white with blue bands onto point a. screwed it all back together & it worked, for about 2mins. just put it back to together again & seems if i screwed the 2 main ones tight so the socket is sealed, it cuts off. if i loosen them a little, it works. last night though i did see my speed go to 4mb (sky said i can only get 2mb max on my line).

Sounds like you are a bit heavy handed. The screw connections are soldered directly to the pcb which forms the master socket. I would guess that you have cracked one of the joints. If you are handy with a soldering iron it is repairable, if not you need a new socket.

Sorry, its not the screws which hold in the wires, its the 2 large screws which hold the top section of the plate on.

what i thought was strange, my cable has 4 wires, my dads only had 2 (red & a blue). does this mean my wiring is older?
