Inconsistent Speeds?? Hi I've recently changed my ISP from BTBroadband to SkyMax.
I have managed to configured my Netgear Rangemax DG843PN (thanks to you guys!) to use with my Sky Broadband.
I am a newbie and looking through your posts it all looks a bit scary...but here goes.
I have been getting really inconsistant speeds since joining Sky. I have everything from 9809 kbps/644 kbps to download speeds of 414 kbps. I am 540 metres from the exchange as the crow flows.
Can you help??
Here's my router stats

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
Thanks for the fast response. I have spoken to BT and they have tested the line and reported no faults. I do have a rather old looking socket though! I'm onto BT to replace it and will take it from there. A process of elimination i think! Thanks again

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
when he said test socket he meant at ur end not BT checking the line - they'll always say its fine as they won't touch BB.....
having said that, its always best to get all wiring sorted before trying to get fast BB as it rules it all out when things go wrong. Are you on an extention now? if so, thats won't be helping-------------------------------------------

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
thanks for the reply. I have rang BT once again and of course the line is fine.
I'm not really sure what speed i should be getting with MAX.
Tested again without the extension lead and got 10448kbps/642kbps

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
if ur wireless then thats about right - if there are still errors on the line try the TEST SOCKET (behind the master should u have a new style one) and see if this improves things

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
Thanks again. Unfortunately I don't have the new type socket. The speeds are around the same both wireless and wired. What should i be looking at getting when wired?

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
My router stats are very similar to yours and i have just got :-
13111 down
630 up
wired
if that helps
the figures can vary a lot depending on the time, and hence how busy the server is

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
Thanks Dave. Being a bit of a novice every bit of information is a help! I'll continue in my quest to match ur speeds!

Re: Inconsistent Speeds??
You have deffinately got very high errors on your line which could well be internal wiring problems. My advice before you spend loads of money on getting a new socket installed would be to carefully remove the face plates on all your sockets and check that only pins 2 and 5 are connected, remove any other wires that are connected, they are not needed and can cause major problems with broadband.
