Hmm, that's weird. My MTU seems to be 1500 ('ping -f -l 1472 www.google.co.uk' gets through, 'ping -f -l 1473 www.google.co.uk' does not).

There's possibly an argument for setting the MTU to 1488 to make more efficient use of the ATM data cells (which are 48 bytes long), but it's hardly worth the effort with the kind of speeds most people get these days.

Re: Optimising your Broadband Connection

Your Line ATT (A messurement of the line running from yours to the exchange is a high value). Could be your phone line takes a different route then your friends? Are you connected via a underground cable or to a pole isit the same as your friends?

Question Re: Optimising your Broadband Connection

Just tried your advice on upping your broadband speed I am on sky up to 8mb package but my average for last month was 5.1 which is very conveniently .1 under the free package . I used the slider and clicked optimise and apply but a pop up appears saying i have not got the priviliges to change the settings . I am the administrator on my computer so any ideas what it means?

Re: Optimising your Broadband Connection

Ran the Optimiser and experienced a slight improvement from 0.98mb to a whopping 1mb.

Every little helps but think I might need to address a larger issue here first if I'm to break through the 1mb barrier.

Re: Optimising your Broadband Connection

I'm no great expert on networking, but from reading and experience I would advise caution on trying to 'optimise' an internet connection somewhat generically by using tools such as a TCP/IP Optimiser. They adjust various networking settings in the windows registry which often do not need any changes.

It's my understanding that the only significant 'tweak' for a broadband connection which can be useful on Windows XP for example, is increasing the size of the TCP Receive Window (RWIN value).

This figure itself can be quite hard and mystifying to calculate, but you can search the internet etc to find out how best to test and calculate it.
Once calculated, then use something like DrTCP (a free downloadable utility from dslreports.com) to enter the value and reboot your pc.

Incidentally, before you do any tweaking, if you run the following command from the Command Prompt in Windows XP, it will reset your computer's TCP/IP 'stack' to defaults.
You will need to look up where to find the Command Prompt if you don't know where it is.

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

the 'resetlog.txt' is necessary so that the command has an 'output'. On my pc this harmless text file gets placed in C:\Documents and Settings\Lee

By the way, I don't know if any of the above networking adjustments have any impact on all internet connections including LAN, or just on network adaptors such as a USB modem.
Maybe someone could clarify that if they know.

Lee

Re: Optimising your Broadband Connection

Thanks, LNB, for providing this amazing little program. I'm signed to an "up to 8 Mb" service, but have been lucky to get 3 Mb lately. After running the optimiser, I'm consistently getting 6.5 Mb . Cheers mate!
