Angry Do you think i've been capped?

Ok so i ran the optimeser but it made no difference, probably cos I already had the MTU set to 1500. I'm on MAX so I would like to get 16meg if poss, if not, as fast as 8meg would be ok, however I am only 1.3km from local exch.

Seriously this is not funny! I need help. Ok guys here goes:

System Up Time 00:15:23
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 4297 3660 0 1629 4562 00:08:29
LAN 10M/100M 323 0 0 74 0 00:15:21
WLAN 11M/54M 5194 6234 0 3522 1279 00:15:11

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4736 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.0 db 20.5 db
Noise Margin 10.7 db 13.0 db

NOTE: Above tests performed in bt test socket utilising wireless connection to PC @11mbps

STRANGELY ENOUGH when i connected the wireless router to the phone socket upstairs next to my PC & hard wired btwn pc & router I achieved the following:

System Up Time 00:06:43
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 8 8 0 11 18 00:00:30
LAN 10M/100M 1203 1182 0 1521 430 00:06:41
WLAN 11M/54M 90 0 0 57 0 00:06:31

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4640 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 db 20.5 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 14.0 db

So the first thing I can conclude is that the wireless link btwn test socket and PC is poor cos it connects at a similar speed but gives a much lower DL speed on the speed test site......

Secondly am i right in saying that there is nothing wrong with the house wiring?

Also, there is some site that i looked at a while ago and I remember it saying that the max a line in my postcode could handle was 5meg, but i think that was a while ago. Dunno about now...................

So, have I been capped? Do I just live in a rubbish area (SLOUGH)!?!? Is there a way for me to fix this myself?

Don't get bogged down in what speedtest results you get, it's the connection speed as shown by your router that matters first. Yes, with your attenuation you could certainly expect a potential connection speed of ~16meg. You're getting about a quarter of this and you say this is via your test socket?

At first glance it certainly looks like you have been capped in some way. However, your noise margin isn't as high as I would expect with a lowish attenuation, capped connection. Maybe something else is going on but your first step must be to call Sky for an explanation. Is there anything you can do for yourself? Not that I can readily think of. You could try another router, different leads and so on but I doubt if it would help.

lastly, as I assume you realise, your wireless connection is severely limiting what is already a slowish connection.

Yeah but here's what I thought - If the Wireless connection says it is operating @ 11 mbps (54 most of the time) then how would it limit a ~5 mbps connection. Is there any way for me to optimise my wireless connection (although not as important as just simply connecting at a higher speed). Am gonna contact SKYBB tomor

Hi Saturday
Many thanks for all your help, the speedtest link you give is great. I have used a few but this by far the best. Anyway i digress, got home that night and ran the test having run it on my 512k at work, guess what the results for my comp at home was still worse than the 512!
So i was about to phone sky help desk when i thought they will ask me to check all my cables. the only old cable i had used was the Belkin cable from the router to the filter, swopped this for the shorter less shielded cable that came with the router and i knew straight away that the fault was there. Speed tests since have been showing 12000!! with 600+ upload.
Anyway just to wrap it up thanks for your help and others may well want to check their cables if they too have a slow speed.
Merry xmas to one and all

That's great news and a good point about checking the cable.
