      How about a Skyuser.co.uk Wiki?

I was thinking. Since Skyuser has (or is about to be) mov(ed) over to a dedicated server - would something like a Wiki be useful for storing HOWTO articles and the like? Something that allows people to contribute useful pieces of information.

As I say, just a thought.

MediaWiki (MediaWiki - MediaWiki) will do everything you want it to. Takes a bit of time to get it set-up and locked down (security-wise), but it is marvelous. I use it on one of my own sites as well as internally at work.

We run this server on Windows server 2003, so any help or if you want to get involved with it let me know

We are still on our other dedicated server at the moment but the change to the new one is imminent.

Wasnt Skyuser.co.uk moving on the new one and the sister sites staying on this server

Also brilliant idea about the wiki!

Re: How about a Skyuser.co.uk Wiki?

I would like to help, but having spent time admining Win2k3 machines with PHP and all the gubbins in the past, I found the whole thing far too messy for my liking and now just stick with running sites under Linux these days. I don't want to even think about trying to get MediaWiki running under Windows - such thoughts scare me

Note - I'm not saying that Win2k3 is a bad OS. Not at all, I love it, but I just feel it's best serving ASP code and Microsoft technologies rather than things like PHP and MySQL. I just found performance so much better under Linux. It's more like a personal choice than anything else.

Re: How about a Skyuser.co.uk Wiki?

The problem with Linux for us is the programs we use etc.

They just wont run on mysql databases, Windows servers are cool, once you get your head around them.

For example the new software we are implementing for:

      1) News / editors

      2) New banner serving software

      3) New Poll / Survey software

will only work on ASP / MSSQL and we looked at loads of alternatives to try and get on mysql - they just are not available.

As for working on the server, noone would be given access to that for obvious reasons, so once we have it working, it would be a case of maybe adminning that particular part of the website.

Our ultimate aim is to have editors on here (like a directory) and then everyone can contribute and take some of the workload off us.

You would not believe how many hours a week we work on this site, take last night for example I was working on the new server from 7pm to 3am this morning and had to be at work for 10am

It will all come together, Rome wasn't built in a day

Yeah I think having Editors of some description is a good idea - if you need any help I wouldn't mind getting involved.

Glenn was too busy laughing at me because I managed to:

      • Break it
      • Install Windows Server in French

All within 7 mins of taking ownership
